Alan Rubin: The problem is that this isn't merely an academic exercise, but, because such things do get published and distorted in places like US News, then read by property owners, land managers, insurance companies, etc and accepted by them as gospel they have serious real-life impacts on issues such as access, ability to get insurance, etc.

Yeah, that's the issue with this particular piece of news. The way it got pumped in the media is actually pretty alarming-- this should've been a really obscure 3rd tier study, partly for the reasons that skrzp notes, yet it got a lot of attention in the tubes.

back in the late 80s we read an article about how 30% of all skateboarders will get injured...

we started skating in large groups and quitting when 25% of us got hurt...seemed to work out ok...

I think the journal article sums up the issue pretty clearly in the discussion.

"Rock climbing–related injuries rose by two thirds during the 18-year study period. This rise is in concordance with the 67% rise in participation in the sport since 1998,1 which indicates that the increase may be a result of increased participation rather than an increased risk of injury".

Why is this news?
