Wow! I was SO worried about starting this essential thread... I thought I would end up with at least one, possibly more, bodily opening from disappointed and angry climbers. You people (what do you mean you people? What do YOU mean 'you people'?) are quite a supportive and wonderful group. Thank you all for your kind words, support and thoughts.
While I personally have given quite a few basement/living room slideshows in my prime I would rather not go into the details of why these shows could not have been done that way; it would only raise a stink. I still believe a quality speaker with a quality show deserves a quality venue.
Do not worry... this is by no means the end of IhatePlastic! I will continue to execrate plastic. I will continue my quizzes (I still have the Mother of all IHP Quizzes to post) and I will continue to produce cool shirts. In fact, I need to post up what will probably be the most popular ST shirt ever! Thanks to t*r for the inspiration!
Again... thank you to everyone!
Signed... Simon King

Too bad;....great effort;....I would have gone to the LA ones if at all possible;...and if there were Joshua Tree ones....definately.........Europe supports their climbers as professional atheletes;....USA supports thier climbers like hobos.....

Simon is a true gentleman and a good businessman. Personally I am grateful for all his efforts and totally respect his judgement about pulling out. He gave a noble effort but times are tough out there.
I will continue to try and arrange slideshows when possible on my own and with the Stonemaster Tour. Thank you all for coming to my shows - it's always good fun and I enjoy meeting all of you. Hope to see y'all soon at another event in the future.
Keep cranking, jb

Hopefully JL at least will still be interested in a presentation in Vancouver, perhaps to coincide with the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival early in 2010. The logistics would be relatively straightforward, it's a well-established event, and there'd be a good audience.

they won't let me into Canada and the show is a partnership so, don't expect it up north. I'll have something together by the start of sept, still wanna do the bay area and the valley, to many friends there so I don't want to dissapoint them. JT is also a great place for the tour to stop and of course Boulder will be on our hit list too, it'll happen just give me some time to get high and plan some shiz. DF

Sorry to hear this IHP. As others have said, no need for a refund; use it to help defray your expenses. Thanks for trying.

WOW, Simon that is the most honest, upfront apology I've ever heard. You are a stand up, good person. I think you have the support of this community and if you want to do something low budget in San Diego area, I'm there to put up the housing, storage, help in ANY way I can to help you out! Hope you can do it again. We don't need a big bollywood show, just a site, a screen and some friends. Let me know, I'm sure we can round up some knuckleheads in our area to help you out!
Peace

Though I understand, the news is so disappointing. Your show with Glen Denny in Portland was great and I planned to attend almost all of the PDX series.
On ST.com there's a great comraderie for hearing about the 'old dads', Stonemasters, Golden Era people. But it surprised me when I told all of my "gym" friends about the shows, and didn't get any takers. Can't really explain.
I hope there will still be a tour for the Stonemasters book.

As Mr. Bullwinkle's counsel, I have advised him not to answer the question mentioned about, because it might confusticate or discombobulate us.
But I can confirm that the Stonemasters show is very good, having (sort of) seen it at the TarParty in April. So hopefully it will eventually happen in other locations.

Sorry that didn't work out, I wondered if it was too big a bite to take on all at once.
Is the t-shirt business still going? I'm still waiting on one.

Simon,
Sorry to hear the shows didn't work out. I just saw this thread and it's a double hit after finding out about loosing John this weekend.
My offer still stands to help coordinate shows for the stonemasters, and to put them up in our humble digs. Lynne/Simon feel free to forward my e-mail info if there is interest in persuing it.
Maybe the Stonemaster tour will morph into a JB memorial / Tyrus trust fundraiser?
It is a shame that such events don't garner the attention they deserve. Sadly folks can justify a couple a latte's but won't put out a couple bucks for a truly memorable event.

Simon,
You did the best you could, and you did set up a lot of shows.
Climbing is a bit of a fringe sport, and it's hard to have shows that even break even. At Stanford we try to have 1-2 shows a year where we pay the speaker, but that money is mostly raised from dues and not admission charges. We could probably do better, but this seems to be what we've been able to manage.

As someone on the east coast who was bummed, not being sure when a show would be coming our way, I must say I'm doubly bummed now :-/
I hope you figure out how to make it work. Gotta keep the history alive for the young'uns sake!

Have you given any thoughts to online slideshows?
I know it's not the same as being in the room with the person, but anyone, anywhere, anytime could view it.
Being the web people would probably want it free, but sponsorships and/or advertisments may make it worthwhile.
They could last in perpetuity as well, so future generations would be able to relive the adventures and learn about style and ethics from the pioneers.
