Sand/shore breaks rule...

Not sure what's more dangerous the Wedge or Sandys on Oahu.I think more people die at Sandys but the Wedge on a big day is sketchy.

I perfer Sandy's; it's much warmer & easier to get a kite up. rg

I lived in Costa Mesa and preferred 17th St for its longer rides. To be honest I did do the Wedge on occasion but I liked my neck too much to be a regular. Lynne, I think I can honestly recall never seeing a girl at 17th St like ever! Mind you, this was '62-'65! In the winter I would wear a tight T-shirt for warmth; what was a wetsuit?

Reilly, really ? What about 65-68 florescent white and pink bikini. I know I was there cause I thought I was gonna die in that bad a** surf. Scary, but like climbing, when yo live thru it ...then it becomes Fun. Smiles, lynne

Edit: Getting back into it. Live in North San Diego and rehearsing surfing with my clan. Great now that it's getting warm. I'm still learning the board. Ever wanna get together I've got a huge water family...really.... just email. Peace, Dude.

The bouldering is on the Corona Del Mar side of the bay and quite a distance away if your driving/parking .

Lynne, I woulda remembered a fluorescent bikini out in the break! Sadly, summer of '65 we moved back to Chicago! Bummer! Did get to hone my ice skiing skills there though and started pulling down at Devil's Lake, Wisconsin in my hardman Converses!

I've body surfed both Sandy and the Wedge at 10 plus feet - not max, but really stout - and to me the Wedge is gnarlier because it generally breaks in shallower water. Sandy is a hollower wave and very quick and it breaks like a thunder clap when it's big. I think more guys get worked at Sandy because there are more goodballs out there. Makapu is also pretty burly when it gets big.

I grew up in Newport Beach. During the summer, my mom would drive my brother, sister, and me down to Corona Del Mar State Beach (AKA Big Corona) and drop us off at 9am then pick us up at 5pm. This is when we were all about 8-13 years old.

Nowadays, my mom would be put in jail for child endangerment, but the three of us somehow managed to survive swimming, body surfing and rafting without any parental supervision. What happened to those days?

bhilden, LOL how true that is. we would leave the house in the morning and not come home until it was time for dinner. and in the summer we go back outside and not come in until it was dark :)

Lynne, The Balboa Bay Club is still there as are a few other places maybe you remember but the place has changed a lot and not for the better IMO. The house I grew up in was torn down several years a go in order to build a Mc Mansion very sad.

t*r, lots of great places here in San Diego where you can learn to surf and the attitude is much more laid back here than up in Newport. Plus good bouldering not to far away from where Lynne as well as I live as long as its not too hot.

Wow, I have never been so glad to make a post on this site! The Wedge has the most power in So Cal. No doubt. But theirs a long list of places better to surf, one of my favorites is this joint.

dogtown, that pic sure doesn't look like the wedge, way too far out, the jetty is conveniently out of the picture, and even on worse days there are 10-20 sponges out... hmmm.
