my buddy's constant companion, a golden retriever, sweet and spry, enjoyed the company of a aussie shepard for a whole summer while his brother was abroad. brought out the best in each other. they were classy adolescents.
in contrast, buddy's roommate was owner in title only of a depressed miscreant, i'm guessing a mastiff/corgy cross judging by his short legs and remarkable head, broad like a hippo.
mostly ignored, he would absent himself for days on what we assumed were benders. his doleful mopy eyes were his best feature. guess he knew how to work em. his philandering resulted in urgent trips to the vet by distraught owners of purebred bitches, other liasons left what we called the mark of humphrey.
three dogs is a crowd but occasionally we relented and helped him into the pickup bed for field trips. the last one included tall grass adjacent to the golf course/ racquet club. humphrey showed up at the truck in obvious distress. it was severe enough to cause us to turn into the drive leading to the country vet. we were thinking alergic reaction, asthma shot or something. in the waiting room we considered that the bill would likely fall into a three corner no man's land.
doc saved the day with a generous offer to remove the tennis ball as a bonus for the price of a neutering, a deal we siezed upon forthwith. imagine roomy's reaction when we told him where 'his' dog was spending the night, leaving out the good news rather spitefully.
mostly on the mend, humphrey hit the road, disappearing for good. to our surprise roomy went through a stage or two of grieving.
many months after we quit wondering, who should show up sporting a red kerchief and an exuberant effervesence. quaffed and buff, smelling fruity with polished nails, bling bling announced some name unbecoming of a montana dog. he was just passing through the neighborhood showing off. we can still split a gut recalling that cameo appearance.
after a polite sniffing, the golden turned away disdainfully, walked over to his spot, layed down and huffed. dog gone brokeback

Off-leash dogs are also a good way to find bears, and perhaps other creatures such as snakes, cougars, coyotes, and wolves.

My old dog Pete loved rotten fish, and we had a beach nearby unfortunately.
He would eat some of it, roll in the rest, then come back reeking and throw-up on the tile floor.
Pete would then look the regurgitation, sniff it, and start lapping away...

My dog Max ate three of my son's retainers at $400 a pop! He even opened a bathroom drawer to eat the last one. He also ate a whole chocolate orange one Christmas morning, aluminum wrapper and all.
Lucky ate some rose bushes to a stub, the living room carpet, the tv remote, earphones for the i-pod, all the window coverings in my 5th wheel and of course the occassional cat poo.
Like I said earlier, dogs...you gotta love em!

Man - I must have lucked out with my mutt as the only questionable thing she eats are ground squirrels and gophers.
She does have a special talent for finding any and all fresh cow pies and horse droppings in a 3 square mile area which she promptly rolls in until thoroughly caked with crud.
She gets a LOT of impromptu baths!

My dog ate a dead rotten possum. I didn't know until he puked it all over the inside of the car 20 minutes into a 4 hour drive home.

Our first weiner dog,ate a loaf of bread before it rose
The result was it rose in her stomach till her skin was ready to split and was walking like she was drunk! I was laying next to her in bed rubbing her tummy ,when she spewed a quart of beer style foam for about three feet ,I never seen a dog so relieved since
