hehe funny - i'm sitting here broke and the backcountry is too sketchy right now with all the snow we just got, so i'm not skiing even though its ten minutes on skins from here to the lift...

when i was a kid it was 10 bucks a ticket to ski at gore mtn in upstate ny...i think deer valley charged me 78something bucks last year for one day ? damn...alta and snowbird are 60 a day, ten bucks cheaper if you find the passes down in the valley somewhere...

I'm a poor student and I still manage it... but I backcountry ski AND get cheap season passes (Kirkwood's season pass for students is $199). I'm also willing to sleep in a tent, or stuff 7 people into a $70 hotel room on Saturday.

Dunno about SoCal, but there are numerous deals in NorCal for season passes ... the best (non-student) run $350 for a top resort like Kirkwood or Heavenly... or cheaper for the small ones. Alpine Meadows and Homewood have reasonably priced day passes ($50 or less), and the rest, if you're willing to ski weekdays, or sniff around for deals, you can make it work with other resorts for reasonable prices. But you have to LOOK!

Sounds like you found a good M-F pass deal at Mammoth.

Edit: ACK! Alpine Meadows has gotten pricier! And the cheapo season passes have to be bought in the summer, not now.

I can't afford skiing anymore. Quit like 10 years ago. Climbing is more fun anyhow.

Here's a Tahoe area link: for example, Sierra Avalanche Center has rotating resort fundraiser tix, for $35, Skiing for Schools does something similar, Mt. Rose has Ladies Day on Thursdays for $29. Then there is the SNOWBOMB card, which has discount tix, and of course, there are discount tix at retailers, etc.

Maybe there is something similar in SoCal?

I'm with DMT... I'll take storm days at a resort anytime. It's amazing how many shite-eatin' grin runs you can cram in in awesome conditions. I particularly recall days at both Alpine Meadows and Alta, where it was late in the day and my thought was, "OK, I'll squeeze in just one more run." Well, by the time I was done, I was well over 10 runs and had lost count (and these were not on short, dinky lifts)!

Not many ski days recently if any. They'll be back though. 10b4me and I had fun at Mammoth a couple of years back, tho.

The last time I skied Mammoth it cost 20 banana skins for a day pass and I was the only free-heeler there and I was on a pair of Rossis that cost a buck and a quarter still in shrink wrap.

Did I just date myself?

Rokjok is right - the 200 clam bogus pass is the schiznet - 3 hours of vertical in the morning and I can make it in to work for a 2pm teleconference and noone knows the diff. Weekends are crowded though and the nearest BC spot is too popular with the fourstroke bubbleheads to be very fun. So I figure just owning a Wii is good enough.

Move to SE Idaho. Pebble Creek is 20 min. from Pocatello, $38/day, $230/season. I used to ski all morning and still make it back to teach a 1 PM lab at Idaho State. Targhee is only 2.5 hours and if you want to spend the $$$ for bigger mountains, Sun Valley, Salt Lake, and Jackson are 3 hours away (in opposite directions). The backcountry skiing is fabulous just 15 min from town. Pomerelle ski area, near City of Rocks, is small but has cheap tickets and snow as good as the Wasatch. The backcountry on Mt. Harrison (which hosts Pomerelle) is amazing. I know of folks there that routinely get 3000' vert. runs with a little snowcat- or snowmobile-assistance. There's basalt rock climbing in a City Park in downtown Pocatello, and not far away, Massacre Rocks, City of Rocks, Sawtooth Mtns., Tetons, etc., etc. Boise and Bogus are great but Boise has traffic/sprawl issues - just what I'd want to get away from if I was moving to Idaho - although you SoCal folks would probably think it trivial.

Eastside, I am a telemark skier and have all the stuff I need for the bc, so plan on a lot more bc skiing this year.

Until this past April I also lived in Crowley, got in a lot of days at Mammoth as well as skiing the backcountry. I had to move back down here due to wiping out my knee hiking into the Owen's River gorge, was unable to take care of myself.

So~ having lost the ski pass was looking for cheap suggestions resort wise from all of you, thanks for all the info!

Karen

ps...real curious how my knee is going to handle telemark turns.

Good question.

From my perspective in Park City, UT I would say most can't.

We are finally starting to feel this economic slowdown even here in Disney Land.

Good thing my season pass to the Canyons only cost $499.

Its a totally fictional desire to want to ski.

What are people looking for.... the perfect run?

It's not like surfing or climbing.. You can't just get some minimal items and go and do it yourself.....

It is required to get an entire industry to back it up.... Once you enter an industry.... it's all about profit.....

Personally, I only felt the need to ski a few times... Learned how at Kirkland... 3rd day I did one of the hardest runs there... Felt like I had had my ass kicked a few times over... That was back when my bones were soft and pliable.

No longer... Find it to be a total waste of my money (worked for), which equates to a total waste of my time (worked).

I guess its a part of getting older... We tend to focus and find out what's most important to us.

No, no...it is a "totally fictional desire" to want to snowboard. Not teleski.

"Lifts are for the weak" ? Yeah ,right, whatever.
Lifts are for those that want maximum vertical ft. in as short a period of time as one has. I find them highly useful. I can go to Squaw get 5 Kt's in and head to work by 10:30. Thats about 6000 ft. in an hour and a half, after all that I do feel a bit weak.

In my opinion telemarking is a fad along with knuckle dragging. Snowboarding allows for a short learning curve for those with a short attention span.

I tele'd for at least a decade until recently. I can go anywhere with my AT gear just as fast as tele'rs. At the resort there is no benefit to tele, if anything it hinders you. Tele gear technology is as old as the tele turn. Yeah they developed plastic boots, but the bindings still bite.

James, my tele gear is far lighter than my old alpine gear, that alone makes it easier on my knees. Snow boarding may have a short learning curve but it is opposite on tele boards, but I don't need to tell you that with your experience.

From what I understand from all my buds on AT gear, is it is far superior in the bc, guess it is easier to climb with. Can't afford to change out my gear so sticking with telemark.

Oh, one more thing James, I do love my Hammerhead bindings!!!
