Philo, I heard today there are still 400,000 people in the Northeast without power.
Also heard that we might not get ours back until Saturday -- that'd be 9 days without.
Also without water, telephone or cell service.
There's electricity at my office, where I'm writing this, but we've gone into pioneer
mode at home. Been there before, but still ....
Lots of cold, tired faces buying coffee and supplies at the gas station each morning.

Museum, I like the look of your snowscapes.
They remind me of an argument on rec.climbing some years back. It was "skis vs. snowshoes,"
with at least one person suggesting that skilled skiers could travel almost anywhere a
snowshoer could, while having more fun. Some snowshoers begged to differ, claiming that
northeastern trails in particular are often not skier-friendly.
As someone who enjoys both modes of travel and isn't terribly good at either, I'm curious how
you'd evaluate skis vs. snowshoes for the kind of terrain you're cruising above.

Chiloe, we quit skiing largely because skis are only more of a hassle. Snow shoeing is our good excuse to get out into the woods in full winter. Lately the snow has been good for that!
You're right too - around here some of trails are not skier friendly. When the skiing is good, the good/fun trails are packed with people.
Oh, and we suck at skiing anyway.

Ain't that the damnedest story? I never could have made this up, and it's such a
coincidence to have written down the prequel with no idea there'd be more.
Hope yer power has stayed on the last 3 weeks.
We're thankful for that. The utility crews work hard around here in the winter.

About 10 or 15 thousand years ago, the Laurentide ice sheet covering North America
met the Atlantic Ocean pretty much in our front yard.
As climate warmed, one chunk 50 meters or so wide calved off the retreating ice front
and got left behind, partly covered by sediments. Eventually it melted too, leaving
a roughly circular kettle hole about 10 meters deep.
There's no trail or sign, but we know where the kettle hole is. Today it made a
pleasant snowshoe destination, for a guy who's been sick indoors for two weeks.
It felt good to get out in the air.

Great stuff everybody.
Lots of winter in this thread, thought I'd throw in some Southern California heat:
Pt. Dume, Malibu around New Year's:
Very rare to get a look across the LA basin to the snow-topped (Gregornio?) mtns beyond, but Dec 31 was crystal clear:
Warm nights:
New Year's day we hiked up Sandstone Pk, the highest point in the Santa Monica's:
Summit:
The baby girl, five weeks old, made it in good style - no milk 'til the summit:
There's some climbing in the area, Echo Cliffs and Boney Ridge:
Looking up toward Ventura and Santa Barbara:
Last day before driving home to Oakland:
My subjective opinion: southern CA is a good place to visit, but northern CA is a good place to live.
