Bishop because of...
Tuolumne
Happy Boulders
The Gorge
Clarks
etc.

It really is a climbing paradise. Yeah, I agree about the dating part. Not that I know personally... :) Just that Andy one of my descent guy friends hated his choices. They were either too young, too wild, or too transient. The only girls he did like were taken and he was smart enough not to go there.

I say Bishop, but if the caldera gets ready to blow..then Truckee.

Bishop gets 100 but it cools down at night. It's more spectacular and remote. It's a long drive to everywhere else.

Truckee has a lot more tourist crap but I-80 is convenient to hit the city when needed.

Hey WIll

If your coming from Redlands, You have to go through Bishop to get to Truckee.

Connect the dots and just keep moving if you want.

The rents in Mammoth are somewhat reasonable now., but will go up if there is mega snow.

Theres a spot for you in the Bishop home game but from what i remember you weren't a re-buy guy.

It will come to you soon but until then if you need any info from the eastside, email me.

Best, Gregg (candyman)

Go to Mammoth - you get everything that Truckee has to offer, with Bishop really close by.

But either Truckee or Bishop rules.

Small city guy? Take Bishop.
Big city guy? Take Truckee.

If climbing/fly fishing really, actually, is your TOP priority, then go to Bishop.

Both places offer great outdoor opportunities. More than a lifetime of climbing either way. Tahoe / Truckee has perfect weather for summer climbing. Better fly fishing in Bishop area. Truckee area has endless single track riding for all abilities.

But........it is much easier to climb year round, The Gorge, in Bishop. If you don't ski it is a looooooong winter in Truckee (and people will just think you are strange because everyone skis there. Why else live buried in 10' of snow for months?)

My advice- Bishop for year round climbing and shorter distance to the Valley. Or, hang with your climbing partners on the ski slopes in Truckee and make frequent weekend trips to the Gorge during the winter.

Either way, lots of outdoor fun.

Bishop: better climbing no doubt at all. However, I disagree about fly fishing in Bishop being better than Truckee. Bishop has fun fly fishing, but its a bit less diverse and year-round than Truckee. Bishop: fun creeks and mountain ponds. Reasonable access to the Owens R, Hot creek, and E. Walker. Fun, beautiful, but a little homogenous.

But, Truckee R. is WAY better for bigger fish (>20"), Pyramid Lake has huge cutts all winter long, the area has better rivers, and you have reasonable access to all the top notch rivers in northern CA, as well as Central Valley and coastal steelhead and delta warmwater fish. There is no equivalent access to these types of fishing in Bishop. As someone who also prioritizes climbing and fly fishing as 1-2 roughly, and who lives near Truckee, I'd vote for Truckee fishing over Bishop.

Thanks for all the input folks. Confirmed my initial impressions. I'll be submitting a transfer request for Bishop tomorrow. Hopefully it will come through.

Went to HSU in Arcata for 4 years.
Decided to take a semester off to "ski for a season" in Tahoe.
18 years later.....

Consider living on the north or west shores of Tahoe.
Way laid back, easy/close access to fun stuff during all seasons.
And of course, the lake.
Still close to Reno, if needed and centrally located for all sorts of good road trips.

just remember you can't get a decent meal in Bishop unless you cook it yourself, there's no nightlife to speak of, or movies, schools are poor, you can't drive out of your driveway if it rains or snows, gas is expensive and you need it to get everywhere. You WILL need big 4x4 with chains. 395 will only get more congested. you won't be a local for a long time. But the surrounding terrain ASTOUNDING.

Truckee is civilized slightly in the above categories, still at 6000ft, has more housing options, schools are reasonable but not fantastic, Big cities are close with things like airports and other services like lawyers and doctors and the surrounding terrain is Really Great and can keep you busy on a daily basis.

depends on whose going with you

AF; It really is a climbing paradise. Yeah, I agree about the dating part. Not that I know personally.

Are you kidding?

In Bishop a summer resort town the dating thing is like this; (In Bishop you never really lose your girlfriend you just lose your turn.)

HA HA HA True

I would have said Truckee for the great ice climbing on Snowshed Wall, but then some people had “hissys” and the ice was no more. So split the difference and go for Bridgeport. "One happening town!"

Relocating?

Okay, we (Jennie and I) are looking at Provençe, New Zealand, Arcata/McKinleyville, Bend (OR), BC (Okanagan Valley), Tuscany, and Chile. The problem with Okanagan and Bend is that we both love the sea, although there are lakes in the Okanagan/Okanogon. So maybe a sailboat - the Med, Carib, points north, east, south and west.

But as for Truckee or Bishop, I’d have to opt for... gawd that’s a tough one but I have never really liked Bishop but I haven’t been there for years. Mammoth is nice but the last time I was on the East Side was in 1993 and it seems that the area is growing too fast (welcome to California).

However, elcapinyourazz, not bad choices whatsoever T or B - if work is not a problem then I would opt for what Charlie Porter is doing, and Joe McKeown for that matter, sailing in the south seas.

Otherwise how about a compromise, that up and coming place, Markleeville.

Or come live in Ireland, now there, I could give you some real advice.

While we're on the subject...and with Bishop as at least part of the topic, can you locals shed some light on r.e. prices there now - still some room to go down? And what neighborhoods are good or at least non-offroad vehicle, non-gun owning friendly (are there any)? Thanks!

I live in Reno, and often go play in Tahoe. Having said that, I could never live in Truckee. Bishop, hands down IMHO.

I have lived in truckee and Mammoth. Truckee's flyfishing is better than Bishops. Climbing is very good in both places. Bishop would be my choice because there are less people, wide open places, and none of the pretentiousness that comes from being close to the bay and being populated by wealthy weekenders.

"Truckee's flyfishing is better than Bishops"
----Probably true. The Truckee River goes off, and Pyramid Lake has righteously huge Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.

Will - "Climbing, fly fishing, and road/mountain biking do matter in about that order." - Spells Bishop, IMHO!
