Thanks, Karl, for the reminder; meant to listen to Sarah Chayes last night and forgot. I think she offers a perspective both unique and ubiquitous, certainly one that we ignore at our peril.

This is all bad because it seems like there's a lot of climbers on this board that hate Afghanistan AND Muslims. That's a problem because I am both Afghani and Muslim, and I actually think some of you guys are pretty cool.

That sucks.

It may appear that way, Mason, but it isn't true.

No one I know hates ALL muslims and especially Afghanis. Afghanis seem pretty cool to me as a culture.

I can understand how you'd be critical of the military mission in Afghanistan, but I personally support our troops and am very interested in their success.

Anyway, it was cool climbing with you and Joyce on Saturday. We should hook up again next weekend and get more climbing done.

Cheers!

Thanks, Blue. I am critical of the missions, but I am not without reason. I haven't ever been to Afghanistan and it's mostly because the country's been in war for the last 30 years of my life and I don't feel like getting shot at when I go visit it. One group after another keeps the country torn and I'd just like to see peace in Afghanistan for once.

Anyway, yea the troops should be supported, but the flip side is a lot of them don't want to be there. You don't hear their voices, though.

Climbing was cool and we definitely should get together next weekend to get some more climbing done.

Oh, and I found your trip report after Joyce mentioned "Wamello" this morning. I thought, Duh!

Well I think that is something that everybody can agree on. Hopefully, after the current conflict settles down (I hope soon), the country can stabilize and thrive as a free Muslim nation, as opposed to what the Taliban had imposed on it.

I remember, prior to 9/11, reading about life under the Taliban's version of Sharia. It wasn't pretty from the eyes of a Westerner. Nobody should have that kind of life imposed on them.

As I said, hopefully we can make the place better for everyone without having to kill too many people.

I hear there's some awesome climbing there too!!!

Yup, I agree. Back in the 60's and 70's my parents said you could walk around in a mini skirt (i have pics of my mom to prove it) and you could enjoy freedom, somewhat.

Great climbing, indeed. Those mountains are amazing!

Maybe we can put together an Afghani Facelift one day.

These will be the 2nd presedential elections since the war started. Hopefully they go well.

Sounds like a punch of Romans who were mad at the Germans after the Germans defeated three Roman Legions in the Battle of Teutoburgerwald in AD9 and of Romans whose lovely city Rome was burned down by the self-indulgent Emperor Nero.

Let's focus on solving our own problems and straightening out our own government first before we spend time worrying about what is to happen to the sheep herders living in the Pamir highlands. Leave the problems of Afghanistan to the Afghanis!
