John:
Here's one of Paul bouldering in Baldy Canyon. This might be pre-Stonemaster, but I thought you'd enjoy the memory.

I think your monitor is a bit out of whack, Watusi! I'm sure it's not calibrated, but it seems farther out of line (color-wise) than normal... Also, it could be that you're not converting the pics to sRGB profile before uploading them? sRGB is the color space that the web uses. Files in other spaces will frequently look "not as you expect them to"....

Seems a little sharp too... What is the ratio of your viewing area when you sharpened in PS? A lot of folks don't know but you only get a true view of the sharpness in PS when viewing at either 25%, 50% or 100%. A lot of files open at 33.3% and when sharpened and then uploaded, they are over sharp. Could just be jpeg artifacting too though.

Yeah been having a little difficulty with this one had to go back quite a few times...Will try monitor calibration now...PS color settings as I thought in sRGB and viewed at 100%. Whoa! I ran Adobe Gamma and my monitor brightness was way low sorry folks...

Hey Mikey!!!!
What's up bro? Missed you in the Meadows, got back last week and spent a lot of time fly fishing thinking about our bro Shawn. He's the one who got me going with fly fishing and as usual Shawn knew what he was talking about. Post up some more old stuff....LOVE it. That shot Pat put up of you on Bachar Cracker is classic. I can remember going to the back of C-4 and watching you smooth cruise it. Dem wer da daze bro! Take care and give a call!

Sorry folks...One more try with this after I calibrated my monitor. Yabo was a really good friend, and I think this shot warrants the work in bringing it to life.

A side story from the "stone gumbies" regarding Spiderline and the Stonemasters. As near as I can remember it was probably spring '78 and my small group of friends were starting to discover climbing. Four or five of us were on the same ledge as Spiderline, about to make a big stride in our climbing by doing "Deviate" and the "Geronimo" roof finish.

An equal size group of Stonemaster type were working Spiderline - I don't remember clearly, but must have been roped ascents because the idea of soloing would have blowns us away. We didn't know about chock and having "real climbers" next to us induced extra hand sweating. Having spied the "white hands" and chockbags we quickly put 2& 2 together, and that this was the edge we needed. One of our group was extra bold (a trait he later exhibited in climbing), walked over and asked if he could have a dip from the chockbag. One of the hardmen grumbled "sure", then watch incredulously as each of us walked over and dip our hands into the magic dust - even though we wouldn't be climbing until our turn was up. As I recall the whole group look at us as if we were total idiots (which is pretty much what we were).

Either way our group got just as much out of cheering our success on the Deviate, as the Stonemasters were having on Spiderline.

I met Yabo later and think he was one of the group that day...

Here are some shots from a recent ascent of the Shield (June 2007).

Looking up at The Groove:

I've got some more, but they're not ready to post yet. I'll see if I can get them up.

Check out www.jgardnerphoto.com (click on sports) to see a great shot of me turning the Shield roof taken by my good buddy Jeff Gardner.
