I love this picture for it shows a very special moment in their lives...
It was a time when climbing for them was more about playing on the rock with their friends than impressing the climbing world, getting sponsorships, arguing over ethics, etc. This picture shows them when they were really happy without the problems of the world on top of them. Metaphorically, it is the time before Eve ate the apple and got everyone kicked out of Eden.

Warbler got it.

I think Paul Sibley clicked the picture at the base of the Bastille Crack in Eldo. Me and Kauk had hitch hiked to Colorado. I forgot how Pettigrew and Braun got there. Werner rode freight trains back to Yosemite!

I had a pack and a haul bag.

I'd run and throw the haul bag on the train first and then grab on and climb aboard with my pack on.

Not so hard, even a hobo can do it .....

I still see folks hitching up here, in the summer. Suprisingly this summer there have been less then previous years. I guess the economy is even hitting those traveling super saver class.

our trick was to buy thick surplus coveralls before we went on the bindlestiff. it was nice to jump off the train at your destination, take the filthy coveralls off, wash your face, and you were good to go. one time we were hopping freights from seattle to the tetons and we had one coverall that had "frank" monogrammed on it, and another had "todd." we modified them so they read "rank" and "odd".

the hobos in the yards got a huge kick out of that.

The guy on the left looks much more like Warbler, than JB. Is this some sort of test? I remember them dudes in them days and it looks like Kevin, not John. But maybe it's the stopper in the nose thing that's confusing me.

You could be right, Kevin. I'm too confused to remember. I do remember great times, though.

yeah, well I'm still not so sure ekats first response isn't correct and jello may not be confused. Look at those mischievous grins...those dudes haven't changed...who be the fools and who be doing the fooling...?

Hey Werner
Did you ever run into any bada$$es on the trains?
I hear now there are like hells angels types who
gang up on hobos and rob/rape/kill people.

Any comments?

Or was it still safe back then, in our childhood

WBraun- there HAS to be more classic shots from this time period is your archives!?!

Maybe one with the Warbler?

You know, pictures Meyers wouldn't have dared to put in the seminal "Yosemite Climber", a masterpiece on it's own.

The one (although there's many) picture from "YC" is my favorite.
Dale Bard giggling at rurp belay, 1st on The Sea.

Double D (taco) took that shot detailing the prerequisite gallows humor.

I got to climb with Mr. Myers waaaaaay back in about
1975? (oh, that single brain cell is being stretched). . .

He used to live in this gorgeous brownstone that even had
gargoyles on it, which turns out just around the block
from where I ended up buying a house. Unfortunately, he'd
moved out by then. . .

Ahhhh, such super trivia. . .
