Probably not coke, LEB. Definitely heroin. Coke is dead as ... dead. Heroin, my friend, is coming back in a big f*#king way.

I APOLOGIZE LOIS. However, It's common unfortunately wherever you work or live.

I took in a friend and climbing partner a couple of years ago who was having temporary difficulties. He/she ended up stealing some of my checks, forging my signature and writing fourteen thousand dollars in bad checks against my checking account. Just recently, I was going to give my daughter a pearl necklace left by my mother for her birthday; that's gone also.

Sometimes, life just sucks a bit.

hey there lois... also, a friend of mine in Boston went for some checkup... and she thought she was having a seizure aura, so her sis dropped her stuff for a second, on a chair, and ran to help her (she was changing) and just for that second someone took a purse from out of her larger purse---took all her money...

they couldnt tell if it was a worker, or another patient/etc walking by... (think the hospital did have a hidden film, though, so they will let us know what happened)... (can't leave stuff sit for even a sec)... and they were supposeded out of the "main stream" public area... sad...

I concur LEB. When my wife was going through MAJOR cancer sugeries, if I hade ever had any indication she wasn't getting pain meds become someone "diverted" them, I would stop at nothing to get my hands on them and make them suffer twice the pain.

"Also, this is just hilarious that you guys think it must be a drug user. "

Your words. Not mine. It's not an issue of it "must be", it's more an issue that it is statisticaly likely to be someone with drug problems.

It's not rocket science. The bulk of thefts in this country are associated with drugs in one way or another.

Lois,
if there is anyone in your ER that looks like the person below, even sometimes, like say, every third day, I would keep my eye on them!

Actually I'm with you on this, it's a bad situation that I've been in. Just thought I would lighten it up, a bit.

Lois,
Sorry to hear of your latest dilemma. Sonsabitches!
I used to work at a place where food was being stolen from the refrig in the break room. I was considering making some cat food sandwiches (or worse), but changed jobs before that happened.

After mixing stains for medical technicians for years I came to appreciate the power of even a few specks of gentian violet (or many other stains) in dry form to dramatically stain one's hands.

Get a tiny bit of gentian violet in powder form (or dry a few drops of a 1% solution). Put a few bucks (coins may work best) in a small ziplock plastic bag. Add a few specks of gentian violet. Seal. No need for ultraviolet, the thief's hands will be well stained in visible light.

If you need to clean the bills for your own use just wash with soap and water and a bit of potassium thiosulfate.

Lois,
I hate thieves as much as litter. Both are selfish acts. All the above advice is pretty comical, some even practical. It may not be what you want to hear, but, your property is ultimately your responsibility. Follow these two rules and save yourself some grief.

Never trust anyone with more then your willing to lose who hasnt proven to be worth at least that value.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Now that you know the value of your trust consider yourself lucky. It could of been for more.

While in a less institutional sort of job it might be okay to try to nab the thief, I have a feeling that sort of behavior wouldn't go over so well in a hospital.

Lois reported the incident, and she should leave it at that. If she tried to snag the perp, what happens when the loser gets all indignant, makes a scene insisting it is their own money and "My rights have been infringed. Defamation of character! I'm gonna sue!" and all that.... which is what would likely occur.

People who do things like steal from other coworkers have no qualms about saying whatever it is they need to in order to get the heat off them. And then, oddly, they often actually believe their own lies.

Someone hit it on the head about people feeling they got shorted in life, and they have resentments or this is "payback." Sometimes, it is a person with a drinking or drug or gambling or sex addiction or some other problem that takes them down.

Sometimes, it is the one you'd least expect. That nice little friendly coworker who you just would never guess. Just like it might surprise you to find out a young coworker who seems they've got it all together is barfing up their meals daily, a similar type can't help but steal from others. Sometimes their very own friends. It's mental instability.

Maybe....ironically....it is even the person who doesn't take action to get those damned lockers that are needed!

Lois may even have a lawsuit on her own hands - if only women are asked to "hide their purses."

I do hope, Lois, that you have asked that problem be addressed(the locker shortage, not if only women are being left out. Unless they ARE and them - oh man!!!!).

I don't think I would EVER have accepted a work situation where I was told I had to keep my bag in a public room unattended. Don't you have an office with a desk, Lois?

Stealing is just plain wrong. I never stole money, food or any item but...

I had a good lesson given to me when I was caught sneaking into a local climbing gym. The day that I lost the owner's trust, I realized that "trust" was worth more to me than all the money in the world. It was not remotely worth saving the fifteen dollar fee. It was a painful lesson to learn.

That is why I think catching the thief and exposing them to others might make them into a better person. It might be worth the effort.

didn't read this whole thread so maybe this has already been suggested, but isn't it possible that it was stolen by someone (or a group of someones) who dislike you, who have decided to make your work environment unpleasant for you, and would prefer it if you'd decide you cannot stay there and have to quit because you don't feel safe in your work environment?

"Weed head.... no doubt. Weed is a gateway drug. Thief is probably stealing $$$ for smack, but he got there by doing weed."

Yep Russ, we've both seen it a million times....

One minute you're smokin' some weed, having a great time, and the next thing you know,
you're turning tricks for fat German business men, or worse, stealing to support your $200 a day heroin habit.

A shame really.

My mother works in a large hospital with a similar employee only locker room (card access). The room is only used by nursing staff, but just about anything that isn't nailed down will disappear. Moms has had her coffee cup stolen, her lunch eaten, and knows co-workers that have had their lockers broken into and had items like cash, iPods, and cell phones stolen.

I used to keep lunch food in the fridge at my work, but noticed things disappearing all the time. I started bringing batches of chili to eat for the week and made it too hot for anybody else to eat.

On the other hand, someone did donate a marijuana seed to the potted plant I had at work. Grew almost a foot tall before I knew what it was.
