or maybe if the word gets around about fresno, they'll move there..

seriously dude, you have to be kidding about fresno. Don't get me wrong, the foothills are great, the central valley isn't that bad, but fresno? but then, it could be worse, you could be spraying about bakersfield.

1. Boulder- no matter how trendy it may be or how annoying some boulderites can be, the amount of climbing within a 2 hour radius is mind-boggling. It doesn't hurt either when you can climb the Naked Edge and be at work by noon. Pretty good skiing.

2. Salt Lake- the Mormons are easy to ignore. Best skiing in North America.

3. Flagstaff- amazing variety. Not much long, commiting stuff nearby though. Sh#t skiing.

4. Vegas- it would definitely be good for your sport climbing. No skiing.

5. Any of a bunch of places in California- towns are far from climbing, little variety (all granite), but the climbing can't be beat. Mediocre skiing... it'll do.

6. Durango or Moab- best options in 4 corners area. Centrally located. Skiing: the amazing Crested Butte isn't too far... Telluride is way overrated.

Anywhere north od CA or CO is either too cold, or the weather is too crappy. Best to just visit those places on road trips.

Tahoe is still best. 3 hours from the Ocean. 3 hours from YV and Mammoth, 2 hours from Bridgeport 3 1/2 from Bishop. 7 hours from Vegas. 4 hours from Castle Crags, Donner, The Leap, Cave Rock are home. Awesome skiing into summer. 40 minutes to legal prostitution. Cool.

I second the Tahoe nomination. It's got everything!

Too bad that housing in the coolest places isn't more affordable.

To Anonymous Coward:

Trust me, there's no way I'd have posted that if I thought most people would even consider moving here. Everyone I've talked to from anywhere else wrinkles their nose and says "115 degrees!? Are you crazy?"

I don't think we have to worry about being inundated with climbers.

The best place for climb , hike, bike and other sport related is Chile. From Santigo you can go to diferent places: hight altitude mountain whit many glaciers, crag, waterfall frozen in winter even in summer, many rock cliff and all this in a mountain enveroment.
Due to yankee imperialism and capitalism, this country like other in latin america is bad for live, because there are few possibilities for development.

Too bad you can't breathe in Santiago during the summer due to horrendous smog. Yeah...great place.

I particularly enjoy San Diego, it has everything you want in a city, and the beach is a good one, not shoddy or 3 hours away where cold water would be waiting for you. You can practice your high-balling in many a place and the advantage is you have all the above mentioned places but much closer...
J-tree= 2 hours
Tahquitz/Suicide= 2 hours
Whitney area= 4.5 hours
Bishop area= 5.5 hours
THE VALLEY= 7 hours
Needles= 5.5 hours

Sorry there isn't much sport climbing but who cares, that's not the real goal, we like hard sick jams of the granitic type, peace

Joseph-

I'm flying to Santiago on Tuesday! Coming down to ski for a week. Send me an email?

I'd really like to get the skinny on the best mountains to ski there & if we need to rent a 4 wheel drive, etc.

Help me out?
Thanks!

Joseph- I consider it to be in very poor taste to come into a forum, start slamming the country of origin of 95% of the posters, and then be surprised when someone calls you on it.

How would you like it if I did the same thing on alt.chile or whatever? Probably not very much.

I agree with Nor Cal that Fresno is ideally located near great climbing...in addition to the Valley and Tuolumne, there is also amazing climbing at Courtright Reservior, numerous domes in the Bass Lake area ("Southern Yosemite"), Sequoia and Kings Canyon Nat Parks, and Tollhouse Rock/Squarenail for nice cragging 45 min from town.

Another vote agreeing with Richard for Orange County/San Diego County where you can surf and climb at Joshua Tree or Tahquitz (both 2hr drive) the same day if so inclined. To add to Richard's list: Red Rocks (5 hrs), Domeland Wilderness (4-5 hrs), and many great "local" bouldering/climbing areas in So Cal such as Mt. Woodson, Santee, Mission Gorge, Stoney Point, Mt. Rubidoux, Big Rock, etc.

FRESNO
Aug 24, 2002 - 01:57am PT
Yeah, Michelle.....you wouldn't want to move to FRESNO. You have to drive a whole hour and a half to get to the Valley, 30 minutes to Tollhouse (a good 600-1000' dome, and 45 minutes to Shaver Lake and all it's domes. Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon will put you out a whole hour in travel time as well. Don't let the big city with a small town atmosphere and very affordable homes in very nice nieghborhoods attract you either. Oh, and believe all the stories you hear about the crime and shootings in Fresno as well; that should keep everyone away. Yeah, and having the ability to have a six figure income and climb a multi-pitch climb on spectacular granite for a few hours after work each day shouldn't attract anyone either. Fresno does suck....don't move here!

Yeah, Fresno sucks and so does anywhere in Utah.

In Utah, the religious overtones are everywhere, and even in the most non-religious center - Salt Lake City, its still stifling.

Plus, the selection of rock sucks, and the best routes are waaay too crowded already.

Cali-forn-ia is the place you wanna be.......
