I had the opportunity to attend a 30-day NOLS course when I was 19, in the North Cascades.
Highly recommend.

I took a year off after high school before going to UColo., and did a Semester in the Rockies with NOLS (1986). Great experience. Highly recommended. I vote with the folks who are saying that the instructors are VERY skilled, and focused on teaching hard skills. When I went on to college in Boulder, I was pretty green but knew everything I needed to lead climb, build anchors, and teach others those skills. In the years since, I've always been glad that I took the time to go through some formal training in rock and mountaineering.
Sometimes a person just needs a time out for something different. Go back to school when it will be more purposeful.
