Thanks for running this thread T-bust,
I've always loved his work.
I don't know how he does it--
I can feel the loneliness, the exposure, the cold
off the high places he draws.
Think my favorite is "Two Climbers", simple and powerful.

Two Climbers appears to be watercolor and as such is a departure from the other works.
Comparisons and similarities among artists can be suggested, often at the risk of detracting from an appreciation of unique and independent vision. Svenson's Two Climbers watercolor pushes towards Samivel. Yet, I'd say the Samivel work is a little softer, less austere/lonely, more open and lyrical than what we see in Svenson's two climbers.

Okay,
While we gather and scan more of those terrific Svenson climber/landscape illustrations, we'll take a look at some of his other genre; the cartoon/comic strip work.

Yes to all of that Tami!
And you certainly found your own voice/vision in spades.
Your stuff is utterly hilarious because it is so on the mark.
Those guys specialized in the capture of atmosphere, while you plumbed the depths of personality, drive, and irony.
Cheers,
Roy

Thanks for the effort to scan and post - this was good fun.
Svenson's drawings reminded of Samivel too - his website is at http://www.samivel.fr/ (Helps to know some French.) His proper name was Paul Gayet-Tancrède.
Pen and ink and half tone drawings seem to work well with climbing and mountains.

I actually know John and he's a great guy. I don't know him "well", but I've spoken with him on several occaisions. I've got several of his prints also, they're great. "High on the Spur" is my personal favorite. Also, the local Mt. Shop here (Foggy Mountain Shop) has a huge piece of wood that he painted a great picture of the Rabbit Ears on.
hosh.

I've loved John's art for decades. It fueled so many day dreams as a teenage climber who couldn't get to the big peaks fast enough.
I found some more images here

I did the West Face of the Leaning Tower in 1968 with John. And recall doing the right side of Monday Morning Slab in iced up winter conditions. Hope to see him next week in the Alabama hills.

Yahoo! Eureka! Gold in Alaska!
I met John in Yosemite in 1970.
In C4. He was climbing the S Face of Washington Column, or planning, or like that level.
Very good soul, I could tell.
Living well, apparently, and I hope prospering.http://www.extremedreams.com/
edit: and I found this on a name search and it came up on this page and I didn't read the earlier two pages and I now find John was climbing at about that S Face competence level in 1968 with the esteemed Calnewt (howya doin?) and that's a lesson in internet life--check the preceding posts and take yer time doin' it! My memory is getting "thin" on top, I 'guess.' I do remember he had a ratty down jacket. Hell we all did.
