To repel marauders & keep the old West shtick, I'd say go with a classic, the double barrel(side by side). It'll catch the attention of any would be hoodlum and you'll look SO cool.

While factoring may be more elegant, it is rarely found in real world situations-hence the quadratic. Factoring mostly pertains to "canned" textbook problems. Here's some fun if you're up to it. Start w/ the general form of the quadratic set to zero and derive the quadratic equation. ie start w/ (ax)2+(bx)+c=0 and solve for x.
PS: Get an 870.

Wow Prod,
nice kink!
Next time I feel like blowing the cost of a new deluxe SUV on a rifle thats where I'm going. (I've long been aware of Holland & Holland. My mom, who was dutch, was always suspicious of the way my father moaned it over and over in his sleep.)

You mean Wil?
If somebody follows Dirt's advice to use a shotgun so as "not to endanger the neighbors" it would probably be best to forego the sabots and other large pieces of lead. LOL

IT'S likely he'll find shot for his shotgun, don't you think?
I hope when he goes into a store an says, gimme something for home defense, they don't hand him slugs.

Why all the sudden concern for overpenetration? The OP said nothing about urban defense. He asked for nostalgic method of repelling maurders. Maby this guy lives in open range country? Probly should have a Sharps .50 for the long range work, a wnchester model 73 in .44 40 and a pair of SA army peacemakers in the same caliber. Winchester 12 ga coach gun can round it out. Oklahoma Lether makes some good riggin to go allong with the hardware. Check out Dixi gunworks for all your nostalgic firearm needs.

Since we're talking old west flash, what was it that Quigley used to reach out and touch someone?
A .45-110?
Thats a .45 caliber slug (300+gr no doubt) projected by 110 gr of powder.

There was a whole passel of long range catriges in the .45 to .50 range. 50-90 being one of them. majin .45/110 was a beast. I load my .50 hawken with 80g of powder and a 320g maxi ball. Shoots flat at 100m but I don't have a longer range to play with. I was shooting 370g maxi ball w/ 90g powder but that bit pretty hard with that skinny, pointy brass butt plate..

carbine?, are you serious? (the 870 is the real answer).
others for fun:
chey tac .408
james degroat has the operating 90mm gun for sale (he also sells post '86 m134's)
I've seen one transferable m134 for $299K (there are about 10 in circulation- Eddie Basha (son) has one in phoenix).
personally belt fed .308's are the best- those you can carry. m60's or HK21's are the only real options (1919's are too heavy).

oh, I forgot to ask. What are the regs on buying a rifle as specified in the original post? Can I walk into the most credible gun shop I see and walk out with hardware, provided that I show ID?
