Condolences, What a bummer Way too young.
Only had the pleasure of meeting Dan a few times, he turned me onto the idea of cleaning the soles of your shoes with pure alcohol to increase the friction for some of those stink bug friction problems at Woodson. I also got to see him lead Hot Rocks at Josh, impressive.

I remember Dan bouldering at the beach in Corona del Mar, buffed as hell and cruising ALL the problems, I remember how many problems he solved for me with his advice or watching him climb them. Sad news indeed, but he'll be delighting spirits where he's at, no doubt about it!

J.B. I'm glad that you told the story about the boxing match. Now I dont have to. My deepest regrets to the Leichtfuss families, the Mcferrins the Mclennans, Maria, J.W., K.P., Eppie and others whom were lucky enough to be friends with Dan. When I was just a lad and lost my parents Dan and Lynn and family took me in like I was part of their clan. They introduced me to my wife, let me stay at their house, eat out of their refridgerator, and live in my bus in their grove. They also let me store my broken down bus in their grove for months while Dave worked on it. Dan was a role model father, a pharmacist,and a strong climber. Able to fire five one arm pullups , Dan helped set standards in Socal back in the day. We're going to miss you. Tragic loss mpn

Todd, thank you for the posting, I've always remembered climbing at Jtree with you, it was great fun.
First, thank you everyone for the kind words, and stories(JB)are great, it means alot to us as a family. And for those of you that traveled on very short notice, in bad weather, to the memorial a special thanks for being there. To those who couldn't be there hopefully we can catch up some day soon.
Being a father of 2 now myself, in looking back I honestly have no idea how my dad was able to even have time to climb with having us 4 kids, much less climb at such a high level. He definetly had a passion for it. That meant learning how to climb at a young age. It was climb or get drug up. I remember at 11-12 yrs old getting anchored to a tree, and wondering which would be worse catching him on a good whipper or getting drug up and having to take out pro if he made it.
He without a doubt lived every minute of his 60 years with us. Dan would have been 61, this Feb. 7th.
The medical establishment never did come up with a working diagnosis, he had to do that himself. What he finally found out through testing with Stanford Univ. is that he in fact had contracted Lymes' disease several years back. Lymes' is a tick borne illness, as I'm sure most of you know. It is also very hard to test for after the initial bite. The Lymes' disease coupled with the after affects of Hodgkins treatment was just too much for even him to overcome.
Please keep Lymes' on your radar. As people who live life outdoors we need to always be on the watch for this. It's quite prevalent on the west coast now, unlike years ago when thought to be an east coast problem and it's very treatable if caught right away.
I hope that with my Dad's passing, we all remember to take time out in our busy lives to reach out whenever possible and stay in touch with one other. If you would like to contact me, feel free at pleichtfuss@cox.net. If you're ever near Escondido/San Diego we'd love to have you over.

this needed a bump and Pete you guy's had a GREAT Dad who brought a lot of friendship, passion of climbing, and left a LOT of people with some great memories. He was so lucky to have his family and friends and we were so lucky to have come across his path in life. Remember.....you have an effect on more people than you know....your Dad was a good example of this.

It was great of you to post a message on my brother, Pete Absolon's, Supertopo blog site.
As we share the loss of two people who loved climbing, it is good to know we are not alone. Our special people will always be missed and a part of the fabric of our lives.
As Pete's wife, Molly Absolon, so beautifully wrote:

Thanks for causing this to re surface, I read this when it first came out, but I don't think I ever met Dan and I never had a real perspective beyond the sadness, tragedy and the fact so many very good people held him in such esteem.
After sort of having come to 'know' Lynne here in the last few months, I feel I have a much greater traction on this, now. What a tough row to follow, Lynne, and what an inspiration you both are for the rest of us. my heart goes out to you, family and friends.

Cause you are all so very special!
I guess I do act sappy at times, but it is only because you guys have made such a positive impact in my life.
I'm at Dan's Mom's right now. Logged on to check out the ST Book Review Threads and there you were ! Your posts were incredible to her and her well being and mine. She just got diagnosed with a bad one.

hey there lynne... say, me not being a climber, i never knew your husband, but i did send condolenses here.... and after you started posting, well.... i suspected you tied in here, but i never asked for sure..... it is nice to the know the connection, and this was blessed for you... :)
