I especially liked the photo of the suncup navigation. Me, - I would have been so tired, pissed off and frustrated that there is no way I would have been taking pictures at that point. Bravo!

Great TR,
Outstanding send.
I've only been up that way one time, climbing Mt. Ritter's North Face but I remember it being incrediblly beautiful. I saw those Banner ridges in the Sierra Classics and have dreamed about going back to do one.
Thanks for posting.

About 10 years ago, two weeks after splitting up with my wife of 19 years, I soloed the Muir route on Mt Ritter. Class 3 (haha) Still one of my favorite routes in the alpine Sierra.
The followong day, I attempted those opening moves you talk about on Banner. WTF, thought I, sloping precarious polished rock, not 4th class. I thought I was off route. So I down climbed and wondered around that amazing and beautiful part of the Sierra, having a most marvelous day.

Barry,
Your account of the trip is 100% accurate in my book. Thank you for a well written TR. Although the trip was scary and over-my-head, I don’t regret any part of it. The sense of accomplishment is so awe-inspiring to the point where everything else seems small in comparison. Here is a short list of the things I would do different next time: Choose a date in the middle of the summer when the days are longer, bring ax and crampons, and start as early as possible (5 A.M or earlier). With the 3 elements listed above, the chances of having to spend the whole night out there would be greatly reduced.

Bearbnz & D-Rod:
Bear, that was a great TR to read, particularly for me because Banner was the first "real" sierra peak I ever stood on when I was ninteen years old.
Here I am on the summit in 1989 at the ripe old age of nineteen, and yes, that look on my face is me saying, "Holy crap take the picture before these stupid pants make me slide off this slab!"
D-Rod, your statement that "The sense of accomplishment is so awe-inspiring to the point where everything else seems small in comparison." is exactly the way I will always look back on Banner. There have been, and hopefully will be, bigger mountains for me; but in terms of what the climb meant to me, few can come close to Banner.
You guys have me itching to go back there and either take my sons to do the saddle route to Banner, or perhaps take a partner to tackle Ritter. I remember looking over at Ritter thinking, Damn... now THAT looks like fun."

Great read ! I was in the hospital when this was originally posted, sorry I missed it the first time.
We're thinking of checking this one out next week. Any recommendations on gear ? I'm thinking alpine rack to 3" ought to do it ?

Great TR. I'm glad someone rediscovered it, as I was, um, away when it was posted. I did my first technical Sierra climbing in the area around Banner Peak, and I'd always been interested in that route. It's on my bucket list now.
