When signing on, I was under the impression that everyone had a nickname. Since day one climbing, I have had freakishly strong crimp strength (and I do LOVE crimpers) so "crimpergirl" seemed an obvious name.
Though it is not my 'real' name, I have never hid my real name (or other things - haha!) so keeping honest has never been an issue. Besides, I am unsure how people can keep track of more than one personality or email address. As popeye says "I yam what I yam."
edit: And like Nature, I have grown quite fond of my nickname. I'd be sad not to be called Crimpie or something like it. :)

Mine was a holdover form a pre-climbing forum. I needed a username, and I wanted something that would be nice, thus the "happie" part. But also I wanted to have an edge, in case people hought I was a pushover. And that's why the "grrr"....l part is there.
My username on all the climbing sites is happiegrrl, except Gunks.com, where it's Terrie(because they made a point of requesting "real" names. Many of the climbers I know call me Happie, so here's a case where my username is almost like a real name. I'm definitely not anonymous.

I spent a lot of time crawling around in the jungle looking for new routes back when I lived in the SE. In this culture, one doesn't usually get the chance to name oneself, at least until Al invented the interweb. My handle tells you more than my real name does.
Melissa and Nanook can still call me Captain America if they want to though.

I'm so computer dumb that when I started here I didn't KNOW you were suppose to have a different name, besides everyone calls me Ron, so Ron Gomez it is. It DOES keep you somewhat accountable for what you say and I'd probably FORGET another name anyway!

"Jaybro" is about as real as it gets for me. I answer to that name on a daily basis; from; aquaitences,progeny,siblings, parents, other relatives, lifelong people i would die for, etc.
If somebody calls "Jaybro" in a crowded room, I am more inclined to assume they are calling me than if they yelled, "Jay", or "John Carl Anderson" even if thet added "of Harvey Ill 7/11/56"
Pretty sure I was first named 'Jaybro' by Frank the Colonel Saunders circa, 1980. though there were other possible contributors, or at least early bandwagon jumpone-ers; Mike Freidrichs, The animal nickname guy, and Dick the Cilley, Will gilmer was in there, too.

Mine is a boy scout nickname, given to me by someone I still climb with. I was anything but a mighty hiker, and generally unathletic - typical adolescent humour.
I initially posted (posed?) under my real name, but it seemed de rigeur to have a nom de plume.
I've never tolerated any other nicknames, or manglings of my real name.

Get it? Since my name is Carrie, curly + Carrie = curlie, or something like that. I admit to creating a "fake" email address for the tacostand, but just because I didn't want to open up yet another avenue for spam (since your email address is viewable by anyone else with a username). I don't really hide behind a nickname, I just think they're fun.

Pud is a spiritual name from the early Roman days.
To "pud" was to give of ones self without expecting anything in return.
You could say someone was "pudable" if he/she was known as a helping individual.
A "pudder" was only helpful sometimes.
Not everyone liked to be "pudded" but everyone loved "pudding"

Well, the red is a recent thing, not natural I should say. :) Though my mom has naturally red (and yes, curlie!) hair. Youth is more a state of mind these days as I just turned 30, but I don't intend on getting "old" anytime soon!
And yes, I do love a good nyuk! joke, much to the irritation of others at times....it's a good thing I crack myself up 'cause everyone else just groans....
By the way, I've always thought the handle elcapinyoazz was very funny. The ludicrosity (is that even a word?) of it!

Some of my 'so called friends' named me The Garden Gnome and threaten to dress me up in a little red jacked and hat. Some of my 'so called friends' send me inflatable tent stake gnomes for my campsite. Some of my 'so called friends' dye their hair red in hopes of also fitting into the furry woodland creature community but we all know that half cave troll, half pixie is just too far out to left field to even fit in that community. And she is too large to boot.

A few years ago, The Ron & Fez Show (on radio) moved from New York to Fairfax, Virginia. I had been listening to them for a few years and stopped by the studio a couple of time a week. They gave me the nickname because my name is Tom, and I'm a cop.
