The rock in Southern Illinois is similar to Elbsandstein and we climbed barefoot sometimes, we also had routes we did with one shoe on and one shoe off. I still love the feel of compact sandstone on my feet. We did try making and using some of those East German arched toe support units when we first heard about them and saw a pic, but decided against using them as they just felt kind of weird.
