Haven't seen anyone mention the big picture: The use of blackmail as a governing tool. I think first used by Newt (and a disaster for him that time), one has to realize that if Trump succeeds, then we can look forward to many, many more of these, when the Repubs are in power.

For example, I tremble at the upcoming debt ceiling vote.......

i find it astounding a system exists where this could even happen - a face of of the elected means the unelected daily grinders stop being paid...wtf.
but no doubt those who think the system is infallible will explain it away.

its all a cargo cult and half the population have stockholm syndrome.

Mango Mussolini at it again. What he is doing amounts to extortion and resembles tactics used by the mob and other gangs. So he wants to "concede" and give daca and tps recipients protection for 3 years? He is the one that took that protection away to begin with. It's like a mobster entering your business and demanding protection money.

Trump’s Plan to Fund Wall Fails, Two Republican Senators Defect
By JACK CROWE
January 24, 2019 3:31 PM
https://www.nationalreview.com/news/trumps-plan-to-fund-wall-fails-two-republican-senators-defect/

The Senate voted down Thursday a Republican-backed spending bill, which would have ended the longest running government shutdown in history and allocated $5.7 billion for the construction of President Trump’s long-promised wall on the souther border.

The bill was defeated 50-47 largely along party lines, though Republican Senators Mike Lee of Utah, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke with their respective parties.

A Democrat-backed stop-gap spending bill that would have funded the government through February 8 without allocating any additional funds for border security also failed to pass the Senate Thursday afternoon.

The competing bills were widely-considered test votes, as the White House and the leaders of both parties were aware in advance that both bills lacked the bipartisan support required to clear the 60-vote threshold.

Mindful that Republicans lacked the seven Democratic votes needed to pass their spending bill, the White House reportedly viewed Thursday’s vote as an opportunity to gauge support for President Trump’s shutdown strategy within the Republican caucus. The Trump-backed bill granted a temporary, three-year asylum to immigrants brought to the country illegally as children in exchange for border wall funding.

The Democrats’ stopgap spending bill, which lacked border wall funding, was voted down 52-44, but received the support of six Republican Senators — Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah.

Manchin defected? Not surprising.
Collins, Murkowski and Romney defect? Interesting.

Romney is trying to set himself up as the next president.

My predictions:

Shut down drags into Feb.

I beginning to see the possibility that Trump will not be the next president, but a Republican will be. Romney, for all his denial, is likely. I still can't tell what the likelihood is that Trump will be impeached. If it is not to be Trump, then that likely means he will be impeached. I doubt that it will happen this year though.

Liberals have gone insane and have become more divisive. They have lost their roots and are attacking silly things like kids in maga hats, while ignoring the fact that the native american lied through and through and has a history of lying. This fires up the right and gives opportunity to a moderate Republican. Thus they will not win the Presidency. They may not even take the senate.

There’s some truth in what you say, John M, esp. about the ‘liberals going crazy’. There’s still a lot of time before 2020, though...lots of time for all kinds of sh#t to go down.

Trump White House grows eager to escape losing shutdown fight
After a day of failed Senate action, Trump and his advisers realize they may never win over Democrats in a battle that is costing them dearly.

Now that the Senate has shot down President Donald Trump’s compromise offer to end the month-long government shutdown, White House officials aren’t sure of their next move.

But they do know one thing: they’re losing, and they want to cut a deal.

Thank you, Nancy. None of those ‘progressives’ that wanted to unseat you would have the grace and cajones to make it this far.

We’re seeing the ultimate futility of the two party system.

They have breakdowns in communication and what not in multi-party systems as well.

Not to mention it is still better than a one party system. :)

Not shutdown related, but word on Twitter is that a sealed case was handed down in DC today. The number stated was 19-cr-18

So...who for the bell toll for this time?

Shut down related. Apparently DT believes that mortgage holders are floating the payments for all those furloughed employees. I believe he also suggested that local grocery stores are keeping a tab for them...

My phone internet sucks, so I am not 100% on the grocery store thing, but if true- on what reality tv show dies this man live?

Thanks for what? Refusing to negotiate with the President over a legitimate issue? Refusing to negotiate over 1/8th of one percent of the budget? For caring more about illegals than her own citizens?

The only 'negotiation' Trump has offered so far is 'my way or GTFO'. That's hardly a starting point.

His bluff didn't work, and Pelosi was smart & experienced enough to see it.

And it appears to have been the right tactic...for now, anyway.

Trump says Pelosi was 'reasonable' in State of the Union decision

President Donald Trump on Thursday said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to postpone the State of the Union address until after the shutdown ends was “reasonable.”

Not true. In fact, it is Pelosi who is crossing her arms. What has she offered? Sign the bill and then we'll negotiate? Do you really believe she'll compromise on a wall after the govt reopens? In fact, she's already said she won't.

Liberals have a strange view of compromise--on a wide range of issues.

One can argue about how 'fair' the tactics were in politics, but that's always a very subjective opinion, depending on whether your agenda is moving forward or not. For right now, it appears Trump & the GOP are starting to bend.

There is plenty of common ground on the issue of immigration- Trump has oversimplified this into his wall, which has minimal impact on illegal immigration and drug trafficking, and public opinion is greatly against. Compromise means putting down his singular, emblematic 'wall', and addressing the problem with real, effective strategies.

I understand the frustration with Trump's temperament. Still, Pelosi is offering nothing but one dollar. If I were at the table, we'd be talking about legislation formally outlawing "sanctuary" cities and states. Maybe a wall wouldn't be necessary if certain Democrat-controlled governments weren't practicing nullification.

Once trump, and the republicans have completed the destruction of the country, and realize they can't do anymore damage, trump will bow out ungracefully.
