I use both those a lot, but unfortunately I'm not the most adept at maximizing their potential. Mind sharing your finagling for either or both? (All things being equal I'd prefer Google Earth, because Caltopo and Strava are fairly easy to just toggle between tabs.)
So the way I know how to do it requires a $20 annual Caltopo subscription, and Google Earth Desktop Pro (which is now free). The Google Earth display is via the Caltopo Superoverlay feature (only available with the paid subscription).
If that sounds reasonable, I've written some directions into a Google Slideshow. Forgive me for not re-typing them out here. Google Slide Link
Good Luck.

Interesting. There's a perfect circle out in the middle of the Salt Flats south of I-80. In the middle of an Air Force Test Range.

I think Strava is global, and I bet many of those billion+ tracks were just people on their morning runs trying to see how far/fast they went. I've just been looking at the Sierra, hence the thread title.
I had a feeling you would not be a fan of this. I'm a bit torn between having fun with this data and agreeing that it's invasive and weird to make it all public.

RjBlake, thanks. I've had a subscription to Caltopo for a couple years now because $20 a year seems like the least I can do for how much I use just the basic format. It'll be good to start figuring out some of the proper benefits of it. And you're forgiven. I'll check out that link to the instructions when I'm on my real computer.

I finally added the Strava layer to my Caltopo account. It's great. Thanks again for putting those instructions up RjBlake.
Slight fix: on slide 5 the url should be "http" not "https".

Hey, Limpingcrab, are those your tracks all around Windy Cliffs and the north side of the Kings River? I've poked around that marble a bit, but never extensively.
PS: Cool you went to Palmer recently...no one does that anymore. I'm surprised you found it!

That's weird, I can't get the map to work at full resolution anymore so I don't see those tracks? I don't use Strava so they're not mine. I've explored around there some but not as much as I want. The first cave I ever went in was Pirates Cave on the north side of the Kings downstream from Boyden. The big wall with the white spot on Windy Cliffs is on my climbing to-do list!
Palmer was tricky. It's been 10 years since my last visit and the 6 inches of snow on the ground made following the old trail tough, and the trail is way more overgrown than I remember. That was my 7th trip up that trail we so still made it without much backtracking, it just took longer than it should have.

Ha! Ya, I don't think the "activity" filter" is very reliable.
I figured out why I lost tracks on the map. There's now an option for users to keep their tracks private. Not surprisingly, the tracks to many caves and fishing holes are gone.

With the "only registered users can see street level detail" update I've lost the ability to overlay this on Caltopo, even now that I've registered. Anyone have a patch/updated instructions?

What do you mean other people’s trails? I own this world!
It’s not like the spy satellites can see me walking out of my front door or anything. Oh wait, it is like that. Good thing we’re social animals.
I’m gonna keep my thoughts on this subject private. D’oh! I guess I’d better read cmac’s privacy policy for the first time.
