We can probably make multiple salads (how about ohitashi or tuna tataki) as well as multiple soups (miso? hot and spicy chicken?), but it would help if people who are actually attending would post their preferences to get the ball rolling.
We can then investigate availability and fine tune it later by email.

Am I the only person who still dares to eat shellfish?

No, I eat shellfish, just not mussels. Nothing quite as tender and delicate as live scallop.

trader joes has instant miso soup in packets that are pretty passable, especially if you dice green onions and tufu to add. we have them for breakfast on cold climbing trips, like a super hearty tea w/ lots of salt.

my preferences:
all tuna types
uni (plus quail eggs? on a camping trip? sweet...)
love avocados, will eat anything green just in case it might be an avacado...
taco might be best in a salad, like a poke hybrid? otherwise, i'd try it, but i'm unlikely to pick that up if there is something softer right next to it.

i'd be strongly in support of taking a conservative approach toward parasites, etc., and that may color my view of eating raw shell fish on a camping trip.

if you get 50 people, how exactly are all 50 people going to contribute to the labor of feeding 50 people? maybe there ought to be a 50% discount for people who roll up there sleves for a few hours, to be covered by those who climb more and/or either lounge or are unable to find a free sushi rolling station? (for the record, i'd rather climb longer hours and pay extra, and don't want to cut climbing short to end up standing around looking over people's shoulders while trying to find a way to pitch in).

what ever you decide logistically is fine w/ me- nice effort fellas.

I wouldn't have thought that I'd have my best live scallop in Sun Valley Idaho but did along with the late Greg Smith ten years ago.
Mere seconds from tank to mouth.

Still nothing beats the live clams I ate as a kid in the harborside bar in Edgartown, Mass.
Those 5 summers on Martha's Vineyard were great. The whole family would wake up at 6:30 drive the half mile to Katama Beach and get an eye opener by being tossed by the surf.

Sometimes grab some clams to open at home.

Matt, I didn't say RAW for the sushifest. and while we're on it saying you'll "eat anything green" on THIS forum is probably ,..uh,..er,..ill advised.

Edit:
There will be numerous tasks delegated to those best able to perform them. We'll need designated drivers, camp assistants etc.
Nature and I are organizing this and we'll make up a crude duty roster of volunteers. But this will be anything BUT some kind of regimented event. No doubt people will just pitch in the same way that they'd be likely to offer a TR to fellow attendees.

But to be successful some things need to be done.

I will be able to be a DD if needed. (I don't drink alcohol)

Piton Ron: You would really enjoy the seafood in Maryland where I live. We do more oysters than clams but that clam story got me thinking that I need to go to the beach again soon.

nature,

I have a request that I forgot to mention - 420 is my birthday! Can I have a Birthday Roll? I go crazy for Unagi, and gooey, buttery salmon. Roe is good too, along with tempura anything!

This is going to be fun!

So - what time, about, would be a good time to arrive in order to help out with the work to be done?

The 20th is Friday - so I'm assuming Friday is the first sushi night?

I am going to be in JTree beforehand, so will plan my travel to arrive to help in whatever way. I'll have the rental car, and will have to figure out whetehr to return it in LV and hitch a ride, or be a driver and pick people up along the way(nondrinker; that might be a good idea).

Volunteers maybe 3-4PM, attendees a bit later.

Not entirely sure when Riley will perform his head biting act as we have not started on the entertainment to be scheduled.

That should probably happen...later in the night, I'd expect. And only if sake causes people to behave in ways that tequila has the reputation of doing....

I was going to make a salty-mouthed sailorgirl remark about eels and head-biting...but I know how sensitive you men can be. So, I 'll just leave it to your imaginations.

nature,
just tossed a check in the mail ( I love that phrase) as a deposit on the sushifest for 2. Don't know who I'm draggin with me but I'm more pathetic than I think if I can't find someone to tag along.

Sign me up for sushi slaving. Although I haven't cut sushi before I know my way around the knives and trash cans.

I have access to recycles/biodegradeable/compostable/PLA plates and cutlery. Let me know if I can help out with that. The world throws away over 3 Billion paper plates a month! Let's not contribute to that sh#t. Better yet, tell people to bring their own plates/cups/cutlery/mugs and side-step the whole situation.

Well Malcolm, although you're the only one legged man I'd bet on in a butt-kicking contest, there's just something about serving meticulously prepared food on a slimy dented crusty metal camp plate that runs against my oh-so-delicate sensitivities.

Since we'll have hot water we're going to be making some compromises but nothing that will assail YOUR pc perspective too egregiously.

I'll eat shellfish. I can get live Abalone (Awabi).

The trader joes miso, though good, is rather expensive. I'll be getting one or three different miso bases in bulk. I'll be doing the dashi soup base (both with and without the bonito). Various soups and salads is a good idea.

I have a great tataki recipe for seared tuna.

Lot's of variety and new ideas is a great way to move this thing. We all have favorite ideas that we'll want to try. We have have a ton of time - so, if it's basic sunomono one night and taco sunomono the next - great!

I get it for about $8/lb cooked but there is a 5 lb min - that's a bunch of octopus

i'd love to get some murigai (geoduck clam).

Here's where most of the fish will come from:
http://www.catalinaop.com/Default.asp?Redirected=Y

they have softshell crab - wooo!

kuan - a birthday roll it is!

Matt, don't worry about the fact that we're "camping". Most of the fish, especially fresh, will get shipped out on Wednesday or Thursday overnight FedEx. I've done enough outside events to know how to keep things clean and sterile (and the fish nice and chilled).

untensils/trays/etc... I have a bunch of all of that I use for caters - most of it is plastic. I think all the chefs have their own cutlery. Probably a combo of folks bringing their own stuff, having some paper products , and using some of my stuff, etc. will be a good direction.

AAAARGGHHH!!!!

I totally forgot that one of my clients has booked me 2 friggin' months ago for a damned 10 minute walk at 10 friggin' pm on either 4/19 or 4/20....I am so irritated. They are hyper-emotional people and I can't have an assistant do it. If I even asked to have my asst. do it, she'd get ridiculously upset, and cancel whatever plans it was they made for the night. And then apologize every time I saw her for the next 3 months for causing me a problem.

The only good news is that she had said "Friday, 4/19"....and the 19th is Thursday. So, I am hoping she has the day right, and not the date. Then I can do the stupid walk and jump on the plane Friday morning. Of course, my JTree portion of the trip will now have to come after the sushifest. Or....Jtree earlier and no sushi fest for me.

For a 10 minute dog walk.

grrr.

I just emailed to clarify the date. Will keep you posted.

Well, it's Thursday.... So, I do get to festivate with you guys!

I will be getting into LV at 10:30am on Friday, and head over the the undisclosed location after stocking up on my provisions for the trip at Whole Foods.

Man....JTree in the end of April.... The Gunks will be in fine condition by then. We'd better have a long, drawn out, wet spring, is all I got to say(We need it, to make up for the mild winter actually. There were masses of flying bugs out flitting around this weekend! No winter here yet!

I guess my dates for JTree will be...head down to Cali on Monday(unless I can get someone to come with me on Sunday nite; I just don't think that Kelso drive is a good idea alone at night) and saty until.....let's seeeeee.....I can't decide. I gues I'll get back on a plane on Thursday, 5/3.

I'll be in JTree for my birthday on 4/29 - happy birthday to me!

Well it is pretty nice of you to do the rolling (plus all the tons of work this is) Nature and Ron you seem to be on this as well. Thanks, even if I don't make it.
I got no idea where I will be living come April. My wife's company was the low bidder for a job in Cali, if awarded we are going and will make it. But this could fall thru or even take all year, or it could be done next month. Those in construction understand.
Nature I will email you and send $ once known. Plus I bring rolling skills, yes my 2 1/2 years of in country guidance has taught me how to do a basic roll, and I have equipment.
In addition should the Sankey family be able to make it we have two resources

We will bring a cooler full of good wine (photo taken today)

But in case folks need further cooked meats we offer this

Quick update:

The list is filling up quickly. Anyone that has emailed me and said they are going is essentially on the list. If I didn't email you back with my address drop me an email and let me know. I'm won't have much email access the next few days.

I'll have a solid count in a week but right now I expect there are 35 confirmed and paid people. If I don't have a check from you by the end of next week I'll move you to the "interested" list. What happens with that list will depend on the total head count moving forward.

There's a chance we can expand a bit (get a few more campgrounds). In the interest of how many we can feed we'll probably not expand much but there is that possibility.

I'm considering getting Real Wasabi Rhizome - any objections? (it's not cheap)
