Hey Neebs I've even put molasas in as well as stuff the bodybuilders use as a pre workout drink which cuts down on the pump and gives one energy and endurance but I just add that to my water now as it has an orange flavour which gives an odd flavour to my mix. But it shure gives one a decent kick

Ultimate climbing breakfast?
It's good for a good crap but not enough energy to sustain me for more than an hour or two. I need a big breakfast to get me through the day.

The strange thing is I've never really eaten much in the morning... even before 12+ hour efforts at altitude or sea-level antics like century rides... If I do load up I just feel sick and sluggish no matter what the carb/fat/protein ratio.
Plenty of Gu enroute however.
Carbo loading the night before is key for me and works much better.
Quaker Oatmeal is the work of the devil btw...

..NO.....You are just eating Oatmeal all wrong...
Follow the Quaker oatmeal cookie recipe but use good butter & good vanilla, use only light brown sugar .
Add chocolate chips..or a mixture of chocolate chips and raisins...and nuts if you want...
Great for sharing with friends, strangers & hobos..(-;

edit: Worked in the 4 seasons...I remember Dale asking for (many) refills of hot chocolate with loads of whipping cream or marshmallows..
edit: Jstan.. eats oatmeal everyday and he is the most youthful 70 year old i have ever met...i don't know what Donini eats for breakfast..

Oatmeal is ok, not as ultimate as a sliver of acid in your coffee, but at least it makes you poo.

Same for me. Loading up energy wise in the morning (I use oatmeal) begins the night before. Then I need to keep feeding the machine to keep the energy up throughout the day.
edit; I have gone to steel cut oats after rolled oats and quick oats. The glycemic index for steel cut is below 50 vs rolled oats(over 50) and quick oats (at around 66). It seems that having some low glycemic index food in the morning, mixed in with medium index foods have helped me keep my energy up throughout the day.

Is oatmeal the ultimate climbing breakfast?
I dunno. How many have you tried?
I have contemplated the bewildering variety of choices in the grocery store. Here are 25 through 48 of 83 in the cereal category of one supplier:
http://www.bobsredmill.com/cereals.html?p=2
The oat bran is good. No sugar. Boil the water first and the cereal cooks as soon as it hits the water although the directions say give it 2 minutes. Not going to give eggs and cheese any competition but it scares me how I can enjoy it day after day (in combination with strong coffee). Plenty of energy in it for me. I can climb all day with no other food, but that required training my stomach what to expect and when. An otherwise healthy person is not going to run out of gas at lunchtime. Oh, and a banana, for morale.

GROSS!
I'm not a baby bird so I don't want my food to look and feel like someone chewed it up and barfed it out before I eat it. May as well eat keesh or jello with fruit chunks in it.
I also don't like to carry a stove or deal with cooking and cleaning up.
It's all about 0.75 liters of breakfast shake (powdered milk with carnation instant breakfast powder) and a pop-tart or two. Good to go! And it still makes you poop exactly 2 hours later.

Barley may be a better grain for me. The GI is 28, and it has massive amounts of protein in it 23g/183g portion which is about 12.5% and we only need around 6 to 10%.
edit; when all else fails, Guinness and Grapefruit juice

I love these climbing chow threads, they always make me hungry. some good ideas here and Crofts' Alpine Climbing book does a good discussion of the different considerations

I went caving with 2 Brits back in the 70's. We camped out below the cave after a late night drinking session. In the morning I was eating fruit and yogurt while the Brits spent an hour cooking up kippers, eggs, bacon, bacon butties etc. One of them said "The problem with you Canadians is you don't eat enough for breakfast"
I never did get a taste for bacon butties (bread fried in bacon grease).
