After ten years on this forum, I am surprised anyone is surprised about any comment they read here.

I would suspect that is not a good idea to jump that object when an officer is present. The potato is the only one that's probably not a big deal. But that's a different state all together.

If the officer didn't know at the time it was a BASE jumper, he might have thought it was a suicide? Because that is illegal in any state. Approaching Jester and requesting him to step down from the bridge and him not complying with the request, is an arresting offense. And just talking with him in a few seconds you can see he's intoxicated. Adding the DUI/possession later? All speculation of course.

But really only Jester knows how that went down.

There are other Spans that are illegal in the state of Ca. but Bixby isn't it.

Rami was an amazing dude. Generous with an outrageous sense of humor. He demonstrated Valor till the end. Tragic loss. Condolences to the family and friends around the world.

I've done too many weird things to criticize anyone else without being a hypocrite myself. I don't see how anyone could swim with an underwater parachute catching the tide and pulling them out to sea. It reminds me somewhat of a kayaking accident. Or maybe surfing, they get dragged out to sea sometimes by the tide. I'm sure the jumpers calculated everything but the water is a lot deadlier than it looks.

Base jumping in general is quite technical amd even the most simple jumps are given a good deal of thought.

I'd have thought as climbers you would understand that.

Unless you are fogged in, the landing at Bixby is plain as can be.

Two people died from a stupid decision, made without giving the reality of the landing much thought. Myself, as a climber have made and fortunately survived decisions that lacked the thought due. BASE is more extreme and much less forgiving than climbing.

BASE seems like a Ponzi scheme to me.

We have lost too many people to BASE, is there a cure?

I don't have much of a clue to the technological aspects of BASE but in climbing there is a line where you leave the rope behind.,,

OUTRAGEOUS! Why on earth were these reckless fools allowed to take on such a foolhardy mission. Such a dangerous act of recklessness would never be permitted in Europe. I would bring a health and safety prosecution against these 2 individuals & whoever else was involved in this misadventure. Their punishment would serve as an example to others who are of the same delinquent inclination

Idiots.

they're both idiots, a stupid thing to have done, they both could have as easily fallen and been killed. Don't care to read the article

I'm sorry but I just don't get it. (...) just seems ridiculous to me. No purpose in it other than to endanger your lives.

Glad we taxpayers didn't have to pay for another rescue.

I do not know if this is really a good thing. How many young people who think they can do the same will end up dead at the bottom now?

This could have easily ended in tragedy. Shame on the DAD who has a small toddler at home!! I just think it's selfish to put your life in such danger when others are clearly depending on you to be alive.

Pretty much agreeing with clinker's comments in this thread and that other shitshow of a thread running in tandem.

You lot are not alone in your opinions http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2910735/Yosemite-climbers-make-history-men-reach-El-Capitan-s-Dawn-Wall-without-bolts-climbing-tools.html

We're all born and we all die. You're dying right now. Freedom comes from making decisions on how to get there on your own terms.

To each his own...

Flying gliders was enough of a rush for me but there were always those guys that HAD to brush the treetops, that HAD to try and cross that 2 mile river at 4k AGL.

What a boring planet this would be without those types of people. We'd never have set foot on the moon, split the atom, sailed across the flat-word oceans, etc....

DMT,
One of these geniuses actually quibbled about whether she was in the surf. Is there anything BASE jumpers aren't experts on?

What's more irresponsible.

Or

"Go for it, it's safe"

So, Flip Flop, from your posts it sounds like, were it up for a vote, you'd vote to outlaw BASE, at least by and large. Do I have that right?

.....

What a tragedy.

A reminder surf requires a skill set all its own.
