I heard that.
Due to his affluenza, I'm sure this will not be his last tangle with the criminal justice system.

Really??? Did you expect anything different?? I suspect that will even be shortened or sent to a cushy place.

Reilly, he gets 120 days if it stays in juvenile court. If it gets transferred to adult court, which the prosecutors want to do, he is looking at a potential ten years.
Note: the mom looks like an alcoholic.

Actually, if he is transferred to the adult system he can only get 120 days for the current charges. If he stays in the juvenile system it is even less. However, if he has his probation transferred to the adult system, he can get up to 40 years for violating that probation again. (which seems likely to happen, considering he's an idiot)

Curious, of those of you slamming the half-maggot (Ethan Couch) who also, at the same time, embrace the principle, 'There but for the Grace of God (Jesus, Mother Nature, whatever your Higher Power) go I', how do you reconcile it? that is, the conflict?
The yin and yang...
Yin: "Lock this turd up and throw away the key."
Yang: "Had you his genes and experiences (science says), you would've done the very same so show your compassion and some mercy."
This back n forth "conflict" - internal and social - is one of the predicaments of the day. Is there any solution?
Discuss.
Perhaps it's not important to "reconcile" it? Just go with your gut, your instincts, what feels good? what feels right (righteous)?
We're just "above average apes" after all. Trying to survive best we can. Ain't that right?

The entire American culture is steeped in so much excessive material opulences that everyone suffers some degree affluenza .....
What's not to like about our nation's masters' unflagging commitment to buying a fleet of Ford SUVs for each National Park?
You Braunians get more work each time they re-equip, Werner. Just sayin'...

I never heard the word before, so I looked it up. It seems to be a particularly American condition.
a : feelings of guilt, lack of motivation, and social isolation experienced by wealthy people <Even so, psychologists are slowly recognizing that great riches are sometimes accompanied by a wealth of crippling emotional and psychological fears. Affluenza can be acute, striking lottery winners or newly minted doctors and M.B.A.s. It can also be a chronic and pervasive condition in families where riches extend through generations. — Anastasia Toufexis et al., Time Magazine, 29 Feb. 1988>
b : extreme materialism and consumerism associated with the pursuit of wealth and success and resulting in a life of chronic dissatisfaction, debt, overwork, stress, and impaired relationships <Affluenza is particularly rampant in the United States, where we place a high priority on financial success and material possessions. — David Hawkins, Breaking Everyday Addictions, 2008>
What did the kid do?
Cosmic, cosmic, you know better. #shakingmyhead You do mean the opposite. That is, of course, only if you want to have healthy loving children without buried rage within as adults. Otherwise, sure.

Monday, Wed and Fri it's yin...
Yin: "Lock this turd up and throw away the key."
Tuesday, Thur and Sat it's yang...
Yang: "There but for the grace of Fate - the forces of Fate - go I."
Had you his genes and life experiences, your conduct would've been no different - a result of prior causes, prior influences. So understanding requires compassion; it requires mercy.
Sunday is a rest day, no judgement or opinion.
How is that for a workable strategy?

.....
I suspect we are destined to argue interminably over the yin and yang of our lives.
I suspect internet forums are the perfect conductor for this phenomenon.

Interesting. Exactly what are you calling BS upon?
a) that I haven't heard the word affluenza before?
b) that I ask what the kid has done?
c) that I don't ever agree with beating a child?
d) a knee-jerk reaction from your part?

Sorry Lollie,
Your post scares me.
No mercy here for that little maggot-pond turtle, unless you think he needs a hug after murdering four people and showing no remorse.
One of the benefits of being agnostic is that I can love whoever I want, and I can hate unconditionally and choose to NEVER forgive in very special circumstances.

Lollie,
What's the greater crime? Taking a belt to a kids ass to force him to have a little respect and discipline. Applied early in life, it's not normally necessary later. Or allowing a kid to be so entitled and out of control tha he runs amuck and kills four people and so on and so forth?

Jeezus.
Do you live in your own little bubbles, or what? There is a world outside USA. Ever heard of? Noticed? I know it's bloody hard, but there's devices which shows those parts too. They're called maps.
I asked what the kid had done.
Do you think all news in the USA spreads across the world? Do you think another murder in the USA is considered newsworthy enough to create international interest?
I see now in later posts what he has done.
