The Pennsylvania Dutch have a saying...."Loving don't last, cooking do."

I regard every bad meal as a missed opportunity.

Seems a lot of people here are into fueling not eating.....and they're pulling up to the low grade pump.

I need to visit Guido!

I pulled into Lee Vining one night late last summer and couldn't find any place open with food. However, drove to the north end of town and found a gas station on the west side of 395 where there were actually whole wheat organo sandwiches and good fruit juice. After 10 pm there's no Whoa Nellie or Mono Mart, so I was glad to find a place where I could find something besides candy bars for dinner. Forgot the name, but will always remember its location for a late night repast after driving up from the Bay.

Djr2 he knows,

The monorito is the way to go.

I wouldn't say it's the best quality food, but just as good as anything in LV. Handmade pastries, sandwiches and burritos, that's all I need to be happy. And all for reasonable prices, you ain't gonna get that at Mobil mart.

Maybe they should put up a trapeze set?

I love the curb-side convenience of Mono Mart and perving on the Berkeley earth mothers that frequent this quaint little store...Check out the hand-crafted entry door with the counter weights and ropes that assist in closing the door ...I love trash talking with the hispanics that work the register and love it even more when they return fire...The fried egg - bacon muffins are excellent and affordable...Their pork burritos can be a little too spicy sometimes but a good deal at 5 bucks...

Many moons ago, after fishing the Eastside for five days and living on mediocre camp food and a bunch of trout, we hit Mono Mart for real meat. That 30 0z. t-bone was one of the best steaks I can remember eating. I saved just enough to fry up with some eggs the next morning. Then it was back to trout-on-a-stick. Breakfast at Nicely's was always good too. Homemade sausage.

Nicely's has cancelled their ATF all-you-can-eat chicken dinners. I think that was on Sunday nights?

But was that necessarily such a bad thing?

GreatScott. . . is that thing still up?

The trapeze is long gone.

Don't care for the Mobil station that much. The first time I stopped there, when the trapeze was still up, oh, 16 years ago, was OK. When I placed my order the nice young gal at the register leaned way over to make sure I got a good look down her blouse. I was impressed. Until the next day when another guy told the same story. And here I thought she did it only for me.

I love this thread, especially Donini's words of wisdom!

Mussels and Salmon in NZ are quite good and reasonably priced. The rest of the seafood, I'm not sure, it's usually out of my price range, but probably good! (Not so sure I get whitebait, however)

We've gotten better at cooking things at home since moving to NZ... things like green chili chicken enchiladas and northern thailand khao soi and homemade italian sausage Things we can't find down here.
