I'm from Omaha originally. The best outdoor bouldering I could find (and trust me I searched hard) was the Walmart wall on 72nd and dodge(ish). You have to avoid security, and it is one of those fancy man made retaining walls, but it was actually pretty fun. It tore up the skin though.

Hah, Jim, right you are about crossing the middle of the country. Try it on a bicycle. I did Missouri--Kansas--Colorado during a solo coast-to-coast, and for about a week straight in Kansas, I basically didn't have to turn my bike, just pedal for that next water tower ten miles on the horizon. I still have PTSD from that ride!

Some creative folks are thinking of bringing back the bison to the northern plains of North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska. The plains have been depopulating for years as people retreat to urban enclaves. Bison, badgers, Black Footed Ferrets, and Praire Chickens will flourish but they don't rock climb.

yesterday; the formation next door had "class 4" overhang

I mean, all I'm saying is that the naysayers are pickier than most vegans.

It can be worse, I rode through the Yukon for about a week, after having lost my glasses by being pulled into the ocean by a big fish. Just a solid week of greenish blur, riding though the unending pine forest.

Now you can’t just casually mention “pulled into the ocean by a big fish” and not share some more details on that story.

I’m picturing a sort of seaside sidewalk and a Halibut mugging.

I had arrived to Haines on the ferry, and camped a couple of days to wait out a rainy spell before getting on the bike. The shore below the campsite was rocky, and steep, so I was about 10 feet above the water. Before long, I had hooked a fish, and it was clearly a good size one, by my standards. While trying to get it out of the water, I lost my balance, and pitched in, rod and all. Man, the water was cold! I climbed out, sans glasses. I dived down a few times, but couldn't get to the bottom. So, I had to ride all the way to Denali without being able to see too well. But I got pretty good at squinting. Once in the park, I got replacements sent to me by mail. Spent the summer working as a cook, and attempted to ride back to Haines in October, but got too frozen.

Bring the wildlife back to the prairies. We used to have grizzly bears on the Alberta prairies.

Was googling abandoned quarries in NE to see if there was anything that would be climbable now, and came across this photo from Weeping Water, so at least in the early 1900s there possibly was a climbable face
