Honestly, I did not get Mothra back in those young days when I'd stay up late to watch monster movies on our black and white tv. Still don't, though I haven't been following the series.
The original Godzilla on the other hand was awesome. Tokyo in flames, I knew this was about something terrible, long before I understood what it was.
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms had done something similar with the Coney Island fire scene, but that was about humans killing what they don't understand, not the end of the world like Godzilla.
But yet another giant lizard of destruction, Gorgo, was my childhood favorite.
While the Beast told a story of big game hunting and Godzilla nuclear apocalypse, Gorgo took two big reptiles into an eco-fable way ahead of its time. And unlike the unfortunate Beast or Godzilla, Gorgo lived happily ever after.

I loved Mothra!
Giant caterpillars shooting silly string all over Godzilla and saving the Earth started me on a lifelong love affair with butterflies and moths.
