What was that guy's name? I feel dumb 'cause I can't remember it.
Remember that guy who was the traveling gear store? Seeley? Seely?
Sumthin. You would be in Yosemite and see him, then he would pop up at Joshua Tree, it was like he was a franchise.

Dick Seely. Thanks. I remember him, I can see his face in my mind but could not remember his first name. He was like a magic elf. He probably helped out Santa the way he got around. Where is he these days?

There is also a Yosemite magistrate court, and that is where John Bachar found himself a few years ago after stealing a toothbrush from a Curry Company store. There he was, pleading for five years’ probation or an onerous fine. But no way was the judge going to coddle a shoplifting Park Bum. Fifteen days in a halfway house in Riverside.

Weirdly symmetrical with current Valley Justice.

Yeah I thought that article was pretty out there..."Working his way up the crack karate chop by karate chop..." Hmmm...Still have a copy of it though...

I gotta say that I read that at an impressionable age. I had been going to the valley in the summers, but had been hanging with the Colorado crowd.

When I read those lines from Russ and Dimitri, I wanted to sleep in the dirt for the rest of my life. All it took was that shot of a young Fish.

I think Russ might have had "Punk Joe" on his rack. That was like a G.I. Joe doll with the head pulled off and mounted on a stick.

A writer can't capture anything correctly it seems like. They usually have the story fit something that they had conceived in their mind previously as a pitch to an editor.

But the line about being 22 and retired, and not having to act like a nimrod cracked me up. Especially now that I am old, have a job, and act like a nimrod all day long. And am painfully aware of it. I don't even drink beer anymore!

Werner never left, so he probably has a hard time understanding how some could miss those days.

Trip was a poser, and the article sensationalized climbing, but Rolling Stone did buy party favors for everyone around while they were in the valley. Anyone who was there benfited from the free smoke, beers, and drinks in the MRB.

Even better was the article in Playgirl telling women where to find attractive young men for their devious purposes, anyone have a copy of that? If you have it, post it! Remember the babes in power suits buying drinks and dinners and trying to clean the bunch of us up?

Yeah Rokjox you're right I guess it was the best way to get the message across...I think that I was just self-conscious that he was portraying me in that article that way...Kung POW!!:)

During the presidential election, Trip
Gabriel covered mountain climbing again: this time, on the front page of the New York Times about Paul Ryan's false claim that he had climbed 40 of Colorado's "fourteeners".

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/07/us/politics/paul-ryan-faces-scrutiny-over-marathon-and-mountain-claims.html?_r=1&

So Gabriel has interviewed both John Bachar and Paul Ryan about their climbing accomplishments...

From the sublime to the ridiculous!

From now on, when Werner posts something, I'll be thinking "there he goes again in his lisping didactic voice..." Nice thread to zombify, well done.
