I am moving to La Spezia, Italy for a job for the next three years next month...
-Chamonix ~3hrs
-Dolomites ~5hrs
-Valle di Mello ~1.5hrs
-Muzzurone (sp) - 10 mins and about a thousand limestone route overlooking the med.
Have you considered the overseas option? I have a friend that works in Academia that just got back from working in Spain. He dug it.

Wow that's awesome! You'll have to post a moving TR with photos. I have considered overseas, but my parrots limit me - mandatory quarantines, etc. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Right now I've applied in SLC and Bend, OR. Haven't gotten all that organized yet though.
Are you looking for academic jobs? What about:
Ft. Collins (CSU)
Chattanooga (UT Chatty)
SLC (U of Utah)
New Paltz (SUNY-New Paltz)
And there are a lot of good schools in Cali.

So goodbye yellow brick road,
Where the dogs of society howl.
You can't plant me in your penthouse,
I'm goin' back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods,
Hunting the horny black toad.
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road.

Thanks all. I am in academia so I'm limited to those locations that have a position available and have funding for them. Getting paid is nice. Places are still posting positions, so more good places (e.g. Reno) may become possibilities.
What are your thoughts about San Jose CA? Something went up there on Friday.
I have parrots. Six parrots - and two I've adopted out may be coming home soon. So quaratines are pretty much going to happen anywhere I go. Even if I could move with them, without a separation from me (don't think I'd survive that), I worry more about getting my birds back into the U.S. even though they were born here!

Just my 2 cents worth. I think that out of your list so far that Flagstaff and Boulder are at the top. As for CA I would choose the San Jose area over Long Beach anyday. There are a few nice areas of Long Beach but, you dont have to go far to find trouble. Alot of Gang activity in and around certian parts. Plus to get in and out of LB you would have to drive on by far some of the worst freeways in all of So Cal. A nightmare at anytime of the day.

I just got laid off this month. I am on the job market but not looking too hard yet. San Jose area is very $$$, so beware of costs. Its a long drive to the good climbing (Sierra Nevadas ~4 hrs), but there is more good climbing than I will do in a lifetime.

San Jose; not my fave place in the area but there is access to climbing. Castle rock, gyms, and Gary's OW for after wrk and tons of stuff for daytrip/weekend jaunts.
How far are you talking for where you climb now? (and stuff like Talahasse to Tw?, etc)
The thing with Flagg and slightly less so with Boulder, is that you could actually walk to climbing if you wanted, bicycling opens a bunch of possibilities and cars give you the world (after work)
In Flagg you could jog up the highest peak in Az on an extended lunch hour. (to do that in Boulder you'd have to take either the morning or afternoon off ;))
I'd look strongly at Reno. Tons of climbing, skiing, beaches, & Deux gre nez (sp, mark?) Some hot days but a world mellower on the heat scale than Saint Loius, DC, Chicago, fla etc.
Bob- ever since Philmont and later geology field work in college, I've always wanted to live in Taos, hope that works for you.
But, you never know where live will take you and there is always something to be made of anywhere. Said by the guy moving to Talahasse to kick Werener's ass in the stock car circuit.
426, waited for you at the snake, what's up? Okay I'm lieing, life, what can I say?

Also, if you find the way to San Jose(¶) watch out for that Feral gang of parrots from 'the city' don't want your flock going native!

I'd also throw in UVa in Charlottesville. Better location for climbing than St. Louis, although not anywhere near in the league of Boulder or Flagstaff. I will say though that Charlottesville is an amazing place to live from a non-climbing perspective. I lived there 5 years and if I had to end up anywhere on the east coast, it would be there in a heartbeat.

Speaking as a fellow academic/climber living in the midwest (year 12) I advise you to get out of here as fast as possible. Ideally, before you come up for tenure. I'm full now and it's increasingly less possible to relocate. On the plus side, I spent about 40 days climbing this summer. Best of luck (and in academia, luck has A LOT to do with it!).

Having lived in the SF Bay Area for 16 years or so and almost 2 in LA now, I can offer the following thoughts.
Both places are truly world class, there's all sorts of interesting things to see and do in both areas.
As far as climbing goes, I think LA wins, particularly if you are into sport climbing. The best climbing for the Bay Area is 3-4 hours away (Tahoe, Yosemite, Tuolumne...) and excellent. There are some closer options, such as Castle Rock and Pinnacles, but they are not fantastic. LA has a number of fun and relatively accessible places (depending on where in LA you are) such as Malibu Creek, Echo Cliffs, the Riverside Quarry, Mt. Woodson. Most of these can be reached in 1-2 hours. A little further out, at 2-3 hours drive, are Tahquitz/Suicide and Joshua Tree, both with great climbing. Red Rocks is 4-5 hours away, there's the Sierras and the East Side (Bishop) that are 3-6 hours depending on how far north you go. Yosemite and Tuolumne will be 6-7 hours drive.
My take on LA is that it is a great place to live but you need to be able to deal with two things: 1) traffic and 2) high house prices (and cost of living). Long Beach puts you pretty much as far from the edges of LA as possible, so you can count on having about an hour drive to get out of town wherever you are going.
The atmosphere is a little different too, but it's hard to explain without being a bit oversimplistic and stereotypical.
Note also that both areas are huge and there are significant regional variations within each area, so the specific area you have in mind makes a difference.
