Even only knowing known John and Anastasia from online, the news is still of course shocking and wrenching. We do become friends/neighbors/part of a community. I am so sorry for the grief and pain those who are close to Steve are suffering with such an unexpected and tragic loss, and will keep them in my thoughts.

Cars!!! The real risk factor for rad climbers everywhere.
Love and condolances to Steve's family as he goes on the the greatest adventure of all.
Last time I talked with John he expressed great sincerity in his appreciation for Anastasia, who is a quality person. I'm glad she's OK and am sure she'll help John with his rehab. Maybe he'll have more time to waste writing some memiors or sharing on Supertopo once the healing is well underway.
Hope everybody finds a way of finding some light in a dark situation.

This is horrible news. I hope that John will be well again and I am glad that Anastasia had only "minor injuries", the trama of the accident is something that will undoubtedly take time to come to terms with.
I had met Steve through Acopa. John had asked me to get in touch with him to fit shoes and get them just right for my feet. After a lot of telephone tag we set up a meeting at the Acopa USA headquarters, which was Steve's El Sobrante home. I drove over one morning and met with Steve. It was a pretty typical climber's meeting, we talked shoes, Steve's history at UC Berkeley where he graduated, my history, our common interest in climbing and his interest in the outdoor equipment industry. It was a long ranging talk, all interspersed with trying shoes on and getting it just right.
I am sure that Steve had a busy agenda working for Acopa, but he was totally engaged in the "vision" of Acopa, providing superior products to climbers to enable their climbing. It wasn't just about selling shoes. The enthusiasm was evident and there was a real connection to the community.
Steve had a full personal agenda, I believe he was engaged, and there was his outdoor activities and all.
When I left, after finding the perfect fit, and ordering the shoes, I had the feeling that I was leaving the house of a long time friend. I had thought that this was a great new acquaintence that Steve and I would be talking together about this stuff we do for a long time. He was a new climbing friend.
So I am deeply saddened to hear of Steve's death in the automobile accident. My condolence to his family and friends. I feel lucky to have known him however brief that time was.

As a long time lurker I have to sign in to relay my condolences to all involoved. I have admired John's contributions to climbing for the last couple of decades and am saddened by this news. Hope you make a full recovery John.

I wish for Anastasia and John to recover soon from thier physical injuries. My hopes and thoughts are with them for thier emotional recovery as well.

I don't think I've ever posted in one of thes types of threads, always feeling a sense of inadequacy to say anything meaningful as well as a feeling of intrusion on the misfortune of someone I only know by reputation or post.
About all I have to add is that when I read this it hit me in the gut like it had happened to a long time personal aquaintance or friend.
Farewell to those that are gone, good wishes and strength to those that are left to carry on.
