I'm guessing that concerns around this subject were involved? Its expressly forbidden on many forums, though not specifically addressed in Supertopo's terms of service.
legal issues of posting e-mail correspondence on blog/ and email addresses as well

Too bad it was deleted. I thought OP brought out an issue actually related to climbing. Can one individual use another person's work to gain financial support and not be penalized if proven guilty?

If the thread was deleted by the moderator(s) because controversy was involved, it is just wrong and out of character with the taco. I don't know any of the people involved and don't know the details, but it seemed to me johnkelly had a pretty rational position.
Can't speak for his history on forum posting because I can't recall any, but seems like he pissed a few people off. I've known others that got trashed & slammed because they went against the grain of the "locals".

You have to define "work". Ideas aren't work. If you have an idea and you don't copyright, publish or capitalize on it, it's only an idea.
Would a photo be considered work? The photo he attached to his grant application was mine, used without my permission or knowledge

It's about "trust".
You stupid people just don't get it.
Trust is priceless and trumps everything below it.
When trust is broken you've broken everything ......

When trust is broken you've broken everything ...... I tried to explain that to my last GF. She broke everything anyway.

WBraun that's my point. I trusted him, after all he gave me his "word" on it. Then he broke that trust and was awarded financially for it

Now the real question I have is it ethically appropriate for the grant committies to award the grants after they know that?

You already know the answer to that.
We now live in world where there's very little trust honor and loyalty.
It's every man for himself.
Stupid Darwinism.
Jackass Darwin never had a clue ......

I'm not sure I have an opinion on your question. The picture(s) may or may not have been part of their decision to award the grant. Regardless of ethos I would think they would want to avoid doing it so they could stay out of something like this. I would think this is not the type of return they were hoping to receive when they awarded the grant.
Apparently, polartec in turn published the picture somewhere. Did any of the other interested parties?

I heard it was shown at the Ouray Ice Festival when the Mugs Stump Awards were announced. I wasn't there so can't say for sure?
Polartec was, after learning the truth, very apologetic and paid me for using the photo. They were the only ones involved that showed any integrity

Funny how sponsored and grant chaser climbers keep blowing it, eh?
If ya want to in the public's eye, better play by the book, or develop a thick skin.

Exactly. You know the answer. It's not ethical. I doubt there is anyone here that would disagree.
Question is - what do you do?
There's little you can do.
It's the way they work. It's bullsh#t.
Now... how to move on and realize there's nothing you can do about it.
The people funding the grants don't care. And my guess is somehow ST is tied in with those folks thus your thread was wiped. Or maybe it's something else. We'll never know.
Welcome to the punchbowl.
Edit: more trip reports.

You know I'm actually surprised about that thread being deleted! Frieh spoke up in it? I'm really curious about what he said now too! Oh man how will I get my climbing gossip soup? :)

Weird, my comment on that thread do not show up on my profile. Even on deleted threads you can usually find your own comments.

If pictures were used for advertising for the companies offering the grant you would think they would need to obtain permission from the photographer to use comercially.
