"For living in (or near) YOse Vally, Werner and Karl Baba sure have alot of posts. If I was that close I wouldn't be online much...unless it was stormy or late night."
If you lived near Yosemite Valley you could crank yourself silly and still post too much
A warm one on the crags today

Should the sum of all characters of all of a users posts be part of the formula to determine this? Some may have a lot of posts but others may have more total characters typed, as in very long posts.

I am collecting the last bits of data, but I don't think it is going to change these results (which I'll edit if they do).
Took slightly longer because of the assbackwards way I wrote the perl script, but... the list of ST posters with more than 1000 posts:

I didn't get into that sort of checking (how could I?) I'm sure there are multiple avatars for single people...
...part of putting it up here is so that you all can check. Also, there are strange things about the database info if you change your profile... I think it retains some of the initial information.
Anyway, have fun with it. Basically the stats are for this week, so some stats may be more up-to-date then others. (Hey, I'm not a frigging genius.)
But certainly an interesting result!

I'll post some more statistical analysis, if it is interesting... as for getting the data, I wrote a "spider" and probably violated my agreeement with ST to not use my account to get information in this manner... oh, well, hopefully I won't get kicked out. Basically I use Perl, if you want the details I can send you the script, but unless you are knowledgable it probably wont be interesting, and if you are, you'll wonder why I did things so strangely.
As for length of time correlated with number of posts, yes... but some people post more frequently then others... Roy is an example (no wonder he needs down time occasionally!).
I will probably do something to see who thread authors are per locker's request.
On the "patterns" thing, I am not so sure that you are correct that humans are unique, though perhaps a bit more proficient. I believe that there is higher thinking in many animals, and real thought that would be recognizable (is recognizable) to humans. There is a continuum of ability rather than a great difference between "us" and "them." An elaborate system of written communication is perhaps the greatest innovation, allowing memory to persist for a very long time, this is the thing which sets humans apart, and it didn't happen all that long ago.

Goddamn ed, you ahve way too muchy time!!!!
Tarbaby is really prolific and fast too!
BUt then, the quality of his posts and the climbing related nature of his posts is also very high.
yaay!!! Tarbaby RULZ!!!
Crimposter is the most prolific female, UGH, you gals, you let a SPORT CLIMBER beat you out!!!!! ARGH!!!!
My posts are mostly bullshyte, if elected, I will not serve, if nominated I will not run. IT is, with a heavy heart...
Juanito needs a large, large glass of tang, and a prolonged date with the RPV, after which, when he is more in touch wiht his feminine side, he will stop abusing his god-given ability to make so many trolls, only a few of which are really good.
BUt when he is good, he's very very good.
IF you are not lauging right now, I have failed.
If you are laughing, Great!
If you are offended, HAHAHA, SUCKER!!!!!

dirt - not a lot of time, that's why I wrote the spider, to do the work for me...
Lois - a spider is a program that goes out on the web and harvests data... check out this definition of spidering . The term is a bit of whimsy (recall that Roger had noticed that is my preferred style, and he was 100% correct, it is part of being a particle physicist actually) for a process called Web Crawling. Recall also that the web was created by particle physicists to share information with each other in a way which took advantage of the interconnectedness of the computers and resources (which we thought were data) in a relatively transparent manner. Little did the particle physics community realize what would happen with this idea a decade later.
Anyway, the idea of writing scripts to automatically collect information is relatively natural for me, coming from particle physics. It is actually something formal in the web universe among the professional web practioneers (of which I am not one). The problems that can arise are based on the fact that the spiders are a lot faster than humans at asking for and getting the information. If the sites have hardware spec'd for human interaction, the "bots" can overwhelm them and essentially make them unusable. Thus my fear of violating the ST policies for users.

Hey Ed - I'd be curious to take a look at your perl script if you don't mind. Something doesn't seem right. I can't imagine how I would have posted on average 2.7 times per day. That just doesn't seem right.
