Not sure if you're referring to Daryl Hatten, but just in case you are, his daughter also learned a lot about her dad thanks to the fellow climbers here.
Incredible, unbelievable interconnected group of amazing souls here...

I spar with John a bit about science and meditation, but his writing is superb! He is a gift to the worlds of climbing and adventure literature.

Alas, a younger Largo wrestles with the demon of ambition! Results on rock are relatively apparent, other aspects of life are less so and require setting personal standards.
Belay on, but don't fall...

I once heard Tucker Tech say, and paraphrasing now, that of all the Stonemasters, John was the only one to " get it".

Locker, I completely agree with you!
I can clearly picture the first time I saw John climb. He charged up a blank, unclimbed slab at Granite Mountains (CA). He must of been 15-16 years old?
I remember thinking gravity wasn't a strong enough force to keep that boy down.
What a tremendous gift he has been to the climbing community.

Bruce,
Small correction. Some of the Tuolumne Guides of the mid-seventies did indeed decide to create Italian names for themselves, but it was Allan, not Dale, that became "Bardini". Later to be known as "The Great Bardini" to his adoring clientele. Yes, Gramicci, and Bobo ... and Tom Carter became "Cartilucci"[sp].
As for me, never having been a Tuolumne guide and being of Italian ancestry anyway (my grandfather immigrated from Lauria, Italy in 1895), it was Warren Harding that decided I wasn't Italian enough and dubbed me Don Lauriano of the Albanian Mafia.
Sometimes I just ramble on ...

I'd like to take this opportunity to post what I'VE learned - from John Long..... and pay tribute to the individual who, single-handedly, inspired my entire career in rock climbing; the one who gave us - the ones greater than 175lbs. - hope that we, too, could go as high as we chose in the vertical world; all the way to the NIAD! east coast style!
John Long has a way of highlighting the greatest parts of climbing - the experiences, the camaraderie, the life stories; and he manages to relate us to those stories in a way no one else has been able to do; and is able to provide clarity as to why we do it all anyway.
John Long makes the unthinkable - possible. He is able to transform what the mind can conceive into a reality;
Couldn't have done it without him.
Signed,
Some Dude
