Mister E, here's the thread. Worth the read. A local "guide" got all his stuff stolen from outside the market up near Indian Cove. Everyone kicked in and helped him get his rack and stuff back in order. Once he was on his feet climbing and guiding again he left the pack outside Coyote Corner to take a shower and shockingly, when he came out it had been stolen. Again.

It's JT. If you're in town, throw your gear into the cab of your truck and lock it before you go inside anywhere. Don't leave it out in the open. Even in daylight.

OP is REALLY lucky to have got his stuff back. Probably cause the steal was till fresh and they got $40 out of him for a fresh meth fix and that was easier than taking the time to sell it piecemeal.

Ok heres the details: I climbed Mikes Books at night with 3 of my friends and we hung out on the top of intersection rock for like an hour drinking and then rapped down. I put all my gear in my backpack. My rope, rack, harness, draws, shoes, ect where all in there. We just put our bags in the bed of the truck with our crash pads and some other crap. My other friends had a truck with a shell and they put their gear in there. So all 4 of us meet at Santanas Mexican resturant right next to Nomads. We ordered food sat down and ate. My friend was waiting for her sister to come pick her up from LA to go to the Colorado river so we hung out there a little longer than planned. She went outside a few times to pack her stuff up but didn't see anything. My buddy with the other truck left and me and my friend Rick drove to the BLM overflow area to camp. When we parked I noticed both our climbing backpacks were gone. We called our friends to tell them and then I called Sanatans to see if they had cameras and then called the police. We headed back to Santans and I saw some people sitting outside the house right behind the parking lot. We wanted to ask them if they saw anyting but decided to wait for the police since they probabbly stole it. I went inside and talked to one of the employees and then some meth head starts talking to me and is real interested in my story. He tells me he lives right behind this place. Then I see the girl that took my order walk back from his house to Santanas. I talk to her a bit and tell her how we got our stuff stolen and she said to come in the morning and the manager can show us the video but the cameras don't even point there. So I go back to the truck to wait for the cops to show up and the meth head comes back and says he knows some people and homies who do this sh#t so he might be able to pull some strings if theres something in it for him. So I say f*#k yeah dude anything would be cool. So he walks away makes some calls, then comes back and says he might have something. He gets on his bike and rides away and comes back a few mins later with both back packs and I gave him all the cash I had like $43. I called my friends and told them the good news and my friend said he saw the meth head walking through the parking lot and going to the liquor store but didn't think anything of it.

So what I think happened is he saw us go in, then the little bitch that works there texted him saying we were sitting down eating and he made his move and stole our packs real quick and stashed them in his back yard, then he saw us come back 30 minutes later and tried to play it off as a cool nice guy and then faked some calls and rode around the block to his back yard and then brought our packs back to us.

Also the meth head was telling me about how cool of a camping spot The Pit is. So anyone who stays there should be extra careful too.

I totally learned my lession to lock my gear up and hide it out of sight too. And Meth heads are sketchy but better than cops.

And thank you guys for not ripping into me too hard for being a f*#king idiot. Hopefully you guys will be more carefull too and learn from my mistake.

PS: I got my new #5 stuck on Super Roof. Im not asking for it back, just throwing it out there if someone wants some booty.

Oh yeah, so the cops called me at like 1 in the morning saying sorry they were busy with a shooting and then I just told them that we messed up and found our gear in my other friends truck.

I left my name and number with the girl from Santanas and the meth head knew we were camping out in the BLM area and knew what our truck looked like. So I just told the police we were fine instead of ratting out that guy. First because the cops probablly wouldn't do anything and second, if they did I don't want his friends coming out in the middle of the night and running me over in my tent or something. So this guy knew some stuff about us and I just let it go and was happy to get my gear back.

Happy you got your gear back, but I wouldn't suggest lying to the police to protect a criminal as that's a criminal offense itself. Why not just tell them the truth? Chucking $43 over as a "recovery fee" is brilliant.....

shouldn't this change your perspective a bit? Cops (highway patrol in those parts are what ya get) were dealing with a possible maiming or murder and your toys got stolen. Glad you got it back, but as I witnissed a few summers ago the Sheriff told me he was the solo guy for all of 62... and it was Saturday afternoon. 2 hours for a breaking and entering.

I don't think there's any way for it to change with how the voting system and lobbying works, sadly, and there's no money to pay for 'em even if we figured it out. Just the wild west out there...

That was the first thing we thought about, but he had a bunch of friends at his house and we had no idea if they had guns or anything. And there is like a 1% chance he was telling the truth and did help us out.

And GDavis, I've never had a cop help me with anything. But I've had them f*#k me over several times. So yeah I should give them a beak this time because they did have a valid excuse, but all in all cops generally suck.

Yep, left our stuff out in the open...
But that was my first time eating there so I didn't know it was a meth head hang out. And Im never eating there again. I had to poop 3 times in the morning and had spicy butthole all day.
