The Republicans, or at least their corporate masters, would just love it if we all learned to serf. And it would serf us right.

I fully understand there are a lot of people who have it much worse than we do. My wife has clients from Argentina who are sacrificing a substantial percentage of their wealth to get the remaining money out to the US. It is bad, yes, but they have leadership to blame and the people did not do it to themselves.
We, in particular California, are doing this to ourselves. Being a Dem or a Rep does not matter, if the state votes for higher taxes we all pay. Do you honestly think the California State Government will really put that money to schools and not the states debts?
As for the Fed intervention in the equity and bond markets, you need to study and read that for yourself. I have watched the markets since business school in the 80's and have learned to read "between the lines". Do not think things are as great as the gov says and please do not assume the stock market and your 401K are safe. Most "smart" money is in cash right now.
Maybe I am looking at the darkest side, but after living through the gas lines and inflation of the 70's, I do not want to repeat that again.
Yes, I need to climb more and worry less. Agreed!!!! But, I can barely afford the gas and since we have had 3 layoffs in 2 years, I now work 6 days a week for the same pay I had 2 years ago.
I am tired of all this, just plain tired.

Have any of you "I'm frightened of the big bad tax man" holes considered moving to a country where there are no taxes?
Along with no roads, no running water, no sewer systems, no police, no ambulance, no DMV, no EPA, no clean air acts, no internet forums where you can freely express your distastes with the government, and plenty of religious types all around to share your experiences with…..
Another bump for Anastasia… Grampa seems to have no idea, or at least is pointing at the wrong problem….

Now, too much of nothing
Can make a man feel ill at ease
One man’s temper might rise
While another man’s temper might freeze
In the day of confession
We cannot mock a soul
When there’s too much of nothing
No one has control
well, i may worry if i have to wear the magic underpants...
All depends, I guess!
Some people tell me that worried blues ain't bad
It's the worst old feeling I ever had

Your questions can all be answered with an in depth reading of the "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire".
We have peaked as an Capitalist Industrial Middle Class Based Civilization.
Next comes a slow decline into Oligarchy where we will be serfs to vineyard owning multi-millionaires.
Hope you can short hoe.

I'm hanging with Gibbon now. I read the book and could not put it away. Read it again, too.
It's not the decline that kills ya. Quite a messy business, too. It did not go quietly. We shouldn't either, come to that. But the question, about fear?
“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
― Marcus Aurelius
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”

After someone falls on a decline, does he (or she, sorry Kirstie) ever get back up?
I'm here to tell ya - yes - especially in the day of the Paul Ryan long count.

America is in decline. If Obama wins it happens faster. If Romney wins it happens a little slower.
End of days......I hope I'm wrong.

And besides it takes MONEY TO MOVE
Not sure you heard about this guy who walked across America.. for no real reason (from what I understand)… just to do it… Started with nothing, got everything he needed from strangers on the road… Heard it was a life changing event for him…
I heard this stuff once.. If you build it they will come… if you want something enough nothing can stop you.. you just have to believe… That's most important I hear.
If Obama wins it happens faster. If Romney wins it happens a little slower. End of days......I hope I'm wrong.
Bwahahaha
Imagination can be such a wonderful or scary place… How many other things have the right been so wrong on… The right and the religious seem to always get things wrong

It's so easy to worry about things, but I am not worried about the fall of the U.S.A. The U.S. is very good at getting itself into jams, but even better at coming out stronger than it went in.
One advantage of a free enterprise system is that individuals can and do find new and improved ways to progress.
The taxonomist above, I feel bad that your business declined to an inferior product. This seems to be happening a lot these days. I just have to wonder if they aren't two different markets for your product. Sort of like any other product or service. One market for those hunters that say this is good enough and another for those who want high end and well done product.
I’m using your field as an example, nothing more, but a taxidermist a few years ago had the idea of writing a book, or producing videos, to earn money with his craft. Seems like this person took the field in a new direction. The suppliers now have hobbyist who most likely buy tons of stuff and waste a lot, and garage businesses who also over buy, that they can sell product to. Again, I know nothing about your field.
I ran a climbing guide service in Tennessee years ago. Taught some guys who wore green berets in the Army and had a couple of state contract working with at-risk-youth. Looking around, I saw lots of people teach basic climbing for much less than I did. I sold the business because I decided that those guys would work for much less than me and that my buyers outside of the government contract wouldn’t know the difference. Even-though these “climbers” or “guides” couldn't offer a product that was to my standards, the buyer had no idea what the difference initially. When I sold the business, I also sold the government contracts.
Same is true with climbing gyms. Long time ago, you could slap some plywood up with t-nuts, offer a couple roofs and mostly vertical walls and you had a gym. Wall became more refined, then gyms added weight-rooms, follow by yoga and Pilates classes. Now starting a gym require much more to be competitive.
Hard times are what helps Americans move forward and develop new directions to move in. New innovations, products, and better services are adaptations, much like Darwin’s Classical Evolution Theory. Am I worried about 2013, no, do I think 2013 will be easy, no not at all.
