^^^Mr. Heckathorn and I shared a number of spicy email exchanges a number of years back about Cook and Washburn. I'd bought that book from him on eBay and we got into the subject a bit. He accused me of parroting Washburn in my arguments against the likelihood of Cook summiting Denali. I had to explain to him that I'd climbed Denali and in the Ruth so had first hand experience in the range and my opinions were based on direct observation. Funny.
I have a smattering of Washburn literary ephemera. Here's a fun one:
Christine Reid was a climbing icon in her own right:

Family book from Uncle Sherwood to Brad.
Brad's brother "Sherry" was named after this uncle.

Book signed by Brad on title page and dated 1927 but in front with card he's dated it on his birthday in 1928.
He was close to his half sister Mabel. His mother's first husband was Samuel Colgate. Yeah, that Colgate family.
The book is heavily underlined with some notes in Washburn's hand. Well studied. My bet is he got it prior to the second trip to Europe in 1927. He turned in the manuscript for his first Putnam book on 15 September 1927. Among the Alps with Bradford. Pretty heady stuff for a seventeen year old!

Pretty clear that he knew that he was headed somewhere significant as a climber, just like the OP indicates.
