They both had a place in alpine because nobody else had a place...not a lot of choices in those days.

I was thinking about this just yesterday; the marketing power of the words "Whillan's, sit- harness"
I don't think it's clear today how that sounded back then. Don Whillans was a legend, ( this was when we called handjams "joe browns") and the wording of "sit-harness" was a revolutionary concept; a harness ( not a homemade "Swiss seat") that actually allowed you to hang from- sit in, sans buttbag, in a hanging belay! That was as big a deal as Friends were, just a few years later!
