Thanks for the photos. I now have both a NY Times account and a viewing of the slide show and the photos of well-known Central Villains.
Stark and not so stark.
Thankfully you're free to ride around in your machines and make a photographic record.
When is the book due out?

This is off then end of Alonzo [sic, should be Alonso] road in Vacaville in 1969.
The current site of Will C Wood High School is just over the rise.
Our family farm is/was the land in the foreground,
and the buildings are on the Marshall Ranch.
I worked on the ranch right after finishing Berkeley High.
All this land is wall-to-wall houses now except for Padan Park,
which had been ours but ended up being a park attached to an elementary school.

Site of the Huffman mansion. Charles Huffman and Charles Crocker (one of the Big Four) were the men who brought Merced River water to the croplands out on the plains starting in the 1870s.
His mansion burned and was replaced by this Georgian home built by C.Ray Robinson, big-time land lawyer and son of pioneer settlers in Merced County. It now serves as a bed and breakfast.

Lakeview gusher Midway-Sunset discovery well near Taft CA
The Lakeview Gusher, which blew out in 1910 at Midway-Sunset oilfield near Taft, California. The Lakeview is the largest gusher the U.S. has ever seen, blowing more oil than either Spindletop in Texas, or the 2010 Gulf oil spill. With 1 well they depleted a tremendous amount of reservoir pressure...
Midway-Sunset field today where much of the oil production is from steam flooding...
South Belridge field where most of the hydrofracturing in California is taking place to stimulate oil from Miocene diatomite deposits..
