In 2004, the CBC did a program called the Greatest Canadian. An English-language television program, with pieces on a wide variety of Canadians, followed by votes by viewers. The ten selected by viewers:
10. Wayne Gretzky
9. Alexander Graham Bell
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. Don Cherry
6. Lester B. "Mike" Pearson
5. David Suzuki
4. Sir Frederick Banting
3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
2. Terry Fox
1. Tommy Douglas
There's more than a little bias towards modern entertainers and athletes, and lack of females, Quebecois and First Peoples. Lack of perspective. I'd have omitted any living person from consideration, thus removing Gretzky, loudmouth buffoon Cherry, and unctuous Suzuki from the list. And thought twice about whether any professional sports figure or entertainer should be included.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_Canadian
(Both my grandfather and Tricouni's grandfather knew Douglas.)
A list of the top ten Canadian male and female athletes of the 20th century, as of 1999, is a bit more illuminating:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%27s_Athletes_of_the_20th_Century
Maybe we should divert the discussion to the top ten Canadian climbers of say the 19th and 20th centuries. That might be entertaining, and on topic. You guys may be surprised at some of the possible names.

So if you're adding organizations and corporations, what about the Hudson's Bay Company? One of the oldest companies in the world, multinational.

Brandon- you might be right. I'd always just assumed Gadd was Canadian. Maybe he should be moved over to the list of Americans Canadians think are Canadian.
