I haven't any idea who Gizmo/Gismo might have been, but the link to the Life Magazine article is amazing. Not just for the article, but for the whole magazine. It's all there -- cover to cover -- and it's an amazing trip to scroll through it.
There's even a reference to Grossman on El Cap, years in the future. See if you can spot it.
