Russ' Boss wrote: nature, you're in charge....make it happen.
yes, boss - I'll do my best!
Enjoy the Mace - the weather is perfect.
mark m - it's not a $1000 buy in. The suggestion is a tourney with $1000 chip stack to start. I think the max just about any of are will to play with for a buy-in is $20 or so. I'd prefer a tourney game as opposed to sitting with a stack of "real" money.
There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what (I think) Russ is suggesting.
He's not suggesting that we all physically sit at the same table. Think cyper-table here folks. If you want to physically sit at a table and stare russ down I suggest you figure out what russ means in this post:
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=163720#msg164541
http://www.pokerroom.com. Signup up as a real-money user. You won't need to deposit.
Once everyone that is interested in playing has their accounts set up we decide on a time we want to play. Maybe we decide 6PM PST a week from Tomorrow (saturday). One of us (me or Russ - I guess it depends on who susan feels like bossing around at the time? ;-) logs into Pokerroom and sets the tourney up. It'll have a password you need to register.
It costs no money to you at the time. Before we start the tourney we decide how much the buy-in is. Let's say we have 40 people (that'd be a lot for this forum) and we all agree on a $10 buy-in. There is now $400 in the prize pool.
For your $10 you are given a $1500 stack of chips.$1500 chips to start is probably a better number. I feel crippled starting with $1000.
Tourneys I play in that start with around 40 people pay to about 7th place. It might work like:
1st: 39%
2nd: 25%
3rd - 15%
4th - 10%
5th - 8%
6th - 6%
7th - 4%
The software would pre-determine the blind structure (how and when it changes, etc). I'm not sure we have control over that. The software probably also determines if there is an ante. Pokerstars.com tourneys have an ante. Hollywood poker does not (and if I remember correctly hollywood and pokerroom are from the same software vendor). I don't think rebuys would work with this scenario (not software supported). I'm cool w/o rebuys.
Russ suggest we pay via paypal. Only thing is I'm not sure how that's any better than just using real money to buy in on the poker software as paypal takes out their percentage for the transaction. On the poker sites you usually pay about a 10% fee to the poker room if real money is used to buy-in at the time. $10+$1 where $1 goes to the pokerroom. If we play at a play table and no real money is exchanged with the poker room than that isn't an issue. Only problem there is you might need a neteller account to move money into the room.
Any more questions/comments/ideas?
Oh, and I'll have an account to play at pokerroom so you can add me to the "I'm In" list. my pokerroom nickname will be "goclimbing".

Good job nature.
I'm for 3k chips to start.
I'd rather call em chips, not $, LOL, confusing chips with $ has already scared some folks.
To reiterate what nature said,
you pay an entry fee, which we determine ahead of time.
The entry fee is all you can lose, period. Think of it as the price of entertainment. Like a movie, or a date at the movies, that's going to cost you 20 bucks. Once you pay it, you can watch the movie, or leave at any time, but you won't be charged any more than the first 20 bucks.
Only, in a poker tournament, the longer you can stay in, the better your chance of getting your moeny back and then some.
Now back to the chips, for your 5, 10 or 20 bucks, you get a few thousand chips to play with. When they are gone, you're out, but even if you do OK for a while, and then you spaz and lose all your hard earned 40k chips, you still are only out the entry fee.
That's why tourney is a better risk to gain proposition than live games. You get all the entertainment you can stay in for, you can win many times what you invested, and you can't lose very much.
IF we had 100 climbers paying 10 bucks each, well, you can see that the prizes would be considerable, but the cost to play would be very small.

ok ya liners.. out here in Phoenix for the games.
I think we can break some new legal ground with this. Home games are perfectly legal as long as THE HOUSE DOES NOT BENEFIT IN ANY WAY VIA RAKE, DONATION, OR ENTRY FEE. But, there is probably some bending of the Wire Act since we are not really at a home game. I'm an attorney in 3 states (just not this one)so maybe Vogel can represent us.
Back to the games: Nature is on to something. Fatal flaw is the Netteller thing to get real $$ into a Pokerroom account. Takes time, feels invasive, and they charge for instant money.
Tell ya what. All you guys just send me a C note and when I exceed that amount in winnings, you can send me another one. No fees, just the price of a stamp.
Maybe us practiced degenerates can run a few practices on the PokerRoom with the FAKE MONEY that is really REAL MONEY then report back to the squeamish on how it really works?
ok, off to see how small Barry is after getting off the "clear"

Big tents LOL. At a campsite, is not your tent your home?
Yer gonna need dealers, did you think of that?
I'm all for an in person tournament. It would be fun. Climb by day, play by night.
It could be a week long event.

I'm pickled still. So I can't add. Give a drunkard a break, would ya!
I'm not pushing the Neteller idea. Just tossing out ideas. Thing is... I closed my paypal account after they allowed me to get ripped off for $100. I'll tell that story at some point.
Why are we going to need dealers? Have you no thumbs? The players deal until you go heads up. Then the rest of the losers help deal. Pretty simple.
Where in Phoenix are you Russ? I'm in Peoria heading to a Mariner game in a few.
OK folks. climb514 is now registered at pokerroom. I'm setting up a tourney. It looks as though you cannot create your own play money tourney. Am I missing something, Russ? Next best idea?
Well... the tourney is created but I don't expect any entrants. it's a $5 +$.50 buy in.
it's under the tourney->private tab called climb514's. It starts at 4:30 PM EST.

I was just testing out the system. To play in this tourney it would require a real money deposit into Pokerroom. Other than the fact that the buy in for a private tourney appears to require real money it's a cool system. Tourney's can be scheduled any time any day - we'll just pick a time when we don't have to be distracted by the UW crushing of UCONN game! GO DAWGS GO!
Oh, and when nobody besides myself registers for the FIRST supertaco's poker tourney I will be officially become the KING OF THE HILL! Where is my STOP (SuperTopoOfPoker) bracelette?
crazyish organic nature - WHO YOU CALLING CRAZY, BUDDY?!?!

Is this thing still happenin'?
I dunno, $5 buy in... Kinda steep, specially with such gamers as Russ, No-peeky Candyman, and Euro-Brief-Guy...
I would normally be pretty positive, but...
This could be a losing proposition for the get-go.
