Crap, I was reminded just upthread that the best price performance ratio was any machine gun, especially the medium/bigger ones with belted ammo like the old US M60 or the German HK121's, with the military supplying unlimited ammo. Starting fires with massive amounts of tracer ammo till your barrel glows orange hot....as it's no charge, it's a winner! (cough* cough*, which is different than no price of course* cough*)

The little one is a Ruger SP101 in .357 magnum with a 2 1/4" barrel. It is an amazing little gun to shoot. Really barks!
The big one is a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .44 magnum with a 2 1/2" barrel. Now THAT is a kicker

Mighty Hiker: Re your downer quote

It doesn't really seem an appropriate thread for the time of year. What are you going to fantasize about, shooting Santa's reindeer?

No problems! Todd & Sarah Palin took care of the reindeer, and the fat red guy, last winter.

Any thread about guns is about overt or implicit violence, if not murder. If you think that's a "downer", pester Ron. It's his thread. And it seems a particularly inapt time to start a thread celebrating death.

And anyone who claims that guns are mere inert pieces of metal, that guns don't kill people, but people do, probably also believes in the tooth fairy.

My business partner and I had a hk21 and bought 13,000 rounds of .308 at 13 cents a round in '06. 1200 rounds a minute and zipping through 200 round belts was great fun. Gun is gone (sold) and the rounds are in three parts, brass scrap-pb down range-and CO2/H2O (and I guess heat).

And no Anders, I don't give a crap about 'shooting humans or animals'. I just like to blow stuff up.

They were hanging people with ropes long before anybody thought to protect a climb with one.

Playing with gear that snaps someone's neck isn't much different from playing with gear that blows someone's head off.

When I think more fun for the $$$. I think of the B.B gun. I would set up a shooting gallery in the house like I did when I was ten. I would just put pillows behind the cans in my 12x12 room!

I had a ton of fun BINTD with my cap and ball revolvers. they bwere cheap to buy and shoot. powder and lead is pricy these days and the replica guns are not so cheap anymore... I always got ammo for christmass from my dad who was an Episcpol minister. LONG before they were all gay women.

Funny thing about that. Episcopals allowed the priests to marry and have kids so they mostly escaped the horrible sex abuse scandals that the stricter more holy catholics have but then they allowed women as priests and ended up with a bunch of lesbians in charge.

First, let me quote a recent reply to the unamericans who fear guns. This is from a recent e-mail i recieved, and eloquent language is very effective to speaking for my thoughts on the topic of guns bad or guns good.

"Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society. But, a firearm makes it easier for an armed mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat - it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser.

People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force, watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier, works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply would not work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation...And that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act !!

By Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret.)"

And my personal favorite for bang per buck is the 22-250 varmiter I just got finished putting together this year. I have had many of the components in the safe for quite some time, just didn't have the pennies to finish it when the career folded two and a half years ago. Although the initial purchase price of the new components was a tad higher than most plinkers mentioned upthread, the user cost per smile after I started using it is pretty minimal. Remington, model 700, weaver varmiter scope, dies, 55 grain pills at $16.00 per 100, 300 brass, dies, primers are nothing, with about three months of spare moments to put it together and tune everything.

Now the precision is second to nothing I have ever owned or used before. On the first outing, my wife and son and I all were able to put a hole through a quarter off the bipod at 125 yards. Their rifle shooting skills are modest at best. It is repeatable all day long. I carry my quarter in my change pocket all the time. Varmits at fairly long ranges out here just add to the fun. Loading my own costs pennies, once the initial goodies were stocked up.

Bang per buck, or pennies per smile if you will, this gun has surpassed even my litle 22 rimfire. The report is loud, but the recoil is absolutely nill. A noise supressor would be over the top, but would sure make those varmits wonder what happened when brother or cousin next to them just dissapeared with a wisp of pink vapor.

My new personal favorite.

OK this is suppose to be the fun gun thread. The philosophy on "why guns" should be another thread. Your viewpoints are worthy and valid, just not interesting here.

------------- That being said. ----------

I'm dreaming that Santa will bring Spider a beautifully crafted Savage Milano, 12 ga., for Christmas.

Perhaps not this year but next.

When this happens, many clay pigeons will die the violent death they live for.

Also, some delicious wild turkeys will be eaten.

Great post Bob.

I have 2 Remington 700s in .22-250. One is a Field piece, BBL, composite stock, 4-12X Vari X 3, but the other is bench resting sweetness, laminated contour stock, 24X scope, and a trigger like the thinnest rod of glass.

A couple of years ago I set out a target at 155m and my spotter put the glass on it.
I said, "Ready?"

"OK."

Bang!

The hole was at most a quarter inch from dead center.

He was impressed.

I should have quit right then,..
