"It's a goddam TV show for you."
That's exactly the problem: For the vast majority of the American public, the war in Afghanistan has always been essentially a TV show. Ever since the draft was ended, the men and women who fight wars and the people who watch them on TV might as well come from two different species, economically and socially. The general public has never supported any war 100% since the Normandy invasion in June 1944.
It might be added though that the war in Afghanistan has never been explained too convincingly to the American people. I don't doubt that there is amazing small unit cohesion and personal loyalty among the troops deployed there, but what is morale really like among the rank and file? I'd also like to know whether our Seals were ratted on by the very people we were over there ostensibly to protect?

What action would satisfy you, Skully? I'm really getting tired of your whining!
EDIT: "It's a goddam TV show for you."
You just need to know where to look. It IS a very active war...

Ahh, here we go...
"Who the hell puts 25 Navy SEALS in one rig into a hot combat zone??? If I were running that theater of ops, the Afghans and Pakistanis would be very afraid tonight.
Fire up the drones, the AC-130's, and have the A-10's and Apache's on standby for anything still moving.
WTF? Why have 5 SEAL teams in an ancient Chinook together???
We can do better. And God bless their souls.... "
"I'm soooo close to just carpet-bombing the whole f*#king area. "
Like you have any feckin' clue as to what the mechanics of this war is about. Just because you read a bunch of war-hawk websites doesn't mean you're fully informed, bluering.
Tell you what. Enlist. Serve in Afghanistan for 3 or 4 years. Then let's talk.

So you would take that person's advice soundly, with more respect than mine, right?

Yeah, I probably would. But before you go and cut & paste some link to the blog of some war-hawk whose opinion you've mimicked, keep in mind that just because you fall in line with someone's opinion, doesn't mean you have had the same experience.

I have no military experience but have been first on the scene a couple of times after the fact that involved someone winding up deceased. It's not cool and I can guess that it's why soldiers never seem to want to talk about all that glory later.
I hope to never see that, Jim. And yer prolly right.
Apogee, look up Lt Col Allen West.....

"...look up Lt Col Allen West....."
Yeah, I did that...if I remember correctly, you turned my attention to him for the first time. I wasn't much impressed then, and since he threw his hat in the ring, I've become less impressed.
Again- just because you've adopted the opinion of someone you respect, it isn't the same thing as having had the experience yourself.

Do you?
It means that quite possibly, the judgment of your political party on things military, is faulty, reckless, ignorant, full of hubris with no actual experience....
That's an uncomfortable realization, to be sure, but nowhere close to the pain that the families of these 30 true Americans, and the several thousand others who have been killed or maimed as the pawns in the chess game, have been writhing in for too many years. It's time for this madness to end.

I thought this thread was going to be about condolences for all the lives lost, including some of our most highly trained forces in what is a very small and specialized unit.
I agree that it was insane to put so many of our best forces in one helicopter. And how is it, 30 or more years after the Russians were driven out by the same hand held technology, that we didn't have our electronic defenses up against this? Over confidence, too much haste, someone forgot to turn on the electronics ? Probably we'll never know as it will all be hidden under the guise of security.
Meanwhile, if anybody understands the mission and the sacrifices, it is our Special Forces and SEALS. A sad day for many, but especially the families. IMO the politics belong on a different thread. I say this as one who works in support of our overseas military, though not in Afghanistan..

Bring them home, now, all of them. From the most sophisticated special ops to the lowliest janitor. Enough. Bring them home.

I understand we supplied surface to air missiles to combatants in Afghanistan when the Soviets were engaged there. The possible presence of those weapons has been a matter of some concern from the beginning. I have not yet seen an account of how the copter was downed. A SAM would be a likely possibility.
Edit:
"Jstan- I think I read that it was a rocket propelled grenade."
Thanks Riley. I couldn't find any mention. The chopper must have been flying fairly low. Nap of the earth to avoid other fire. That we have not come on arms provided by certain other nations is an important story.

As noted on another thread the missiles we gave the Muj in the 80's are all gone
or merely souvenirs. Their batteries had a limited life of 3-5 years as I recall.
They couldn't be re-charged, no replacements were available, and you can't
jump-start them.
If this was a missile it was most likely Chinese but possibly Russian and
more than likely courtesy of Pakistan's ISI.
It could also have been one of Charlie Wilson's Bofors.
