You went to Crossroads for breakfast with Country Kitchen right across the street? What were you thinking?

More coffee hun? homemade salsa?

Crossroads is for lunch.

All I need to know is, do they still have the coyote?

Edit: to add, Pie for the People is mighty tasty and unique, despite the price. Not the standard grease fest. strange hours though. Closed on a wednesday? Really?

Probably thinking that the CK is a filthy shithole that has decidedly subpar greasy-spoon fare...the kind of food that isn't difficult to excel at, yet they manage to be, by a wide margin, the absolute worst of the 100s of greasy spoon breakfast places I've eaten in.

I did not have a great experience with the pizza place. But, I see others have liked it, so will give it another chance. I liked that little bakery there before them, and was sad they didn't make it.

Sam's IS great. I do NOT understand why more people don't know about that one! The pizza is good, and the indian fare is reeeally good. I know it used to have a horrid decor(white formica past it's prime) but don't know why that would have stopped anyone from enjoying the food. Now, with the new decor, I agree it compliments the quality of their menu.

How is the salmon entree at the JTree saloon? I have only had their burgers and fries, which I though were very good, especially at the price. I also had a desert there once and it was very good. I think it was a mud cake or similar - seemed higher quality that a western-theme saloon type place ought to be serving - hahaha. And they are VERY good about allowing one to sit - and sit - and sit(at down times) whiling their work hours away on the free wifi.

Also - that middle eatsern place in Yucca is really very good. I hope they have been able to stay open. The owner was on site working the line, and genuinely cared about serving well. It "looks" like a stirp mall restaurant from the outside because...well, it is in a strip mall. But it is a privately owned place with good quality food at good prices.

Should be back in JTree sometime between November and....some time after that!

We went and had breakfast at the new Crossroads recently. I ordered their tofu scramble and my partner had egg whites - both came with sides of potatoes and choice of bread. The tofu scramble was really good, but a pretty small portion (same with the egg whites) - they made up for it with a generous serving of the potatoes; however, the potatoes were soaked with grease, lukewarm, and somewhat flavorless. The toast & coffee were good.

I doubt I will go back for breakfast, but am game for lunch/dinner.

It could happen, Dingus, it could happen...

If the preserve ever has to use the cabin I live in for an employee, I will be homeless and see no reason to remain in NY(other than a commitment to trailwork on Sundays in season).

If my NYC apartment situation implodes, I will be lowly of income and need to get a j-j-jo...umm, do something that will bring in more income than I currently get as I slave away at, not one, nor two, nor even three, but FIVE paying ventures and 2 volunteer ones. I see no reason, if that dire situation should occur, to tie myself to a desk or cash register or whatever it would be, in the cold winter environment of the northeast.

If the man of my dreams up and decides we should live somehwere, together, else...well, anyway.

Slowly, California does seem to be reeling me in. I am very excited about being west again, and cannot believe it is nearly time to make the trek.

The old Crossroads was good hippy fare. I never understand why someone buys a reasonably successful restaurant and then messes with the recipes, they almost always fail within the year. If you want to write your own script, start your own joint ground up.

That said, I'd never open a restaurant, I think they fail more often than any other (legal) business.

Yeah, this could become a fun JT tradition...sort of a 'Where's Bobcat?' kinda thing...

Bobcat goes to Circle K...

Bobcat checks out Pappy & Harriet's...

Bobcat tweaks on meth and rides his ATV through the Park...

The possibilities are endless!

I noticed a B rating, in the window from the health department.
It looked pretty clean inside, except I think they forgot to wash the ceiling.
The food was good, but there was too much of it.
They sell Russian River Damnation Ale and that's a plus!

I thought it was bad.

I ordered blueberry pancakes...how can you screw that up? Even I can do good fluffy pancakes with Bisquick.

My first plate came with 2 VERY flat pancakes (made me long for Denny's and that is WRONG). And when I took my first bite I tasted batter. I looked on the underside and it hadn't been griddled...it was one side cooked, the other not cooked at all. Sent them back and when the new ones came they were burned on both sides, still flat, and with batter taste on the inside with every bite.

I took pics but my camera is acting up, will post when it's not being so touchy. Once it's working you'll see what I mean.

Not a fan of the new place. Their menu is all over the place. Bonnie had a much smaller menu but did all of those items wonderfully. This place has the "something for everyone" vibe but I don't know that it's a plus. Asking your cooks to do a NY Reuben next to chicken quesadillas next to god knows what else. It's just a food factory.

I miss the old Crossroads, Bonnie's personal touch, the funkiness of the place (that stuffed bobcat really does need the roadtrip apogee suggested). Bonnie said the new owners would be keeping some of her more popular items but that's not the case.

Heh Gary, somewhat agreed. But Country Kitchen has a small griddle surface and last time I got pancakes there, they'd been poured over a recent ham slice. So when I ate my pancakes, I tasted ham the entire time (I'm vegetarian so it wasn't good, I stopped when I tasted the ham).

It's all good though. Saturday morning is JT Farmer's Market time and I get all I need to get me through the weekend food-wise. We went to Crossroads Sunday to have a big friends breakfast this past weekend. Was just very disappointed in their food...I mean, how can you f*ck up pancakes? Seriously? Even just using the Bisquick recipe on the back of the box could have made them fluffier and tasty. These were flat as a quarter and tasted like batter. Not good batter either. And either way undercooked then overcooked and STILL the batter was congealed in there.

It was just wrong.

So I take it that the seared sushi grade ahi served over a half wild harvest salad is kaput...?

Yep Kris.

There's nothing on the new menu that even comes close to reflecting Bonnie's menu. Even their quesadilla (which Bonnie never had but again, how can you screw that up) doesn't come with chips or salsa. It comes with cabbage slaw and black beans. WTF. I don't want cabbage slaw with a quesadilla.

But they did put in a deep fryer so they do have french fries - and chilli cheese fries! Oh yeah.......(not). But I'm sure others will love that.

Some will love this new place, others won't. I'm in the "won't" column but I'm fortunate enough to have Steve's kitchen and grill to make my weekend JT meals on. If I didn't have that, I'd either be getting a slice from Pie for the People or going into Yucca to find food. The new Crossroads is just not for me.

But that's just me. Others may love it, others will hate it. But I have a feeling there's no in-between on this. Will be interesting to see how the opinions come out as more climbers head there this season.

Just don't order the blueberry pancakes.
