And in the Glenwood Srings video..thats just surfing isnt it? He paddles in laying down, catches the wave and stands up. Then he surfs holding a paddle for no apparent reason. Still a cool vid though

ITs fun as hell in the rivers that's for sure. Especially in those water parks. A friend of mine just started a company for SUP (river boards) high end custom sh#t. Made to tear river waves up. We're headed to Glenwood CO today to surf some big stuff. I'm scared and psyched.
Here's a couple of links to 1. there website 2. Outside mag TV interview
This is great stuff and they are just starting to take off........soon to be big time.

The board shop in mammoth rents them out. I think they rent cheaper than kayaks. The last time I was at mammoth lakes I saw them all over. I think it's a fad but hey whatever floats your boat. Flatw#ter.

I see a fair amount of kids and older people paddling around on these big boards out on the CA Delta. This is very flat water and in most instances it appears the kids are out paddling somewhere to meet their friends (which I think is pretty rad) and the other people are out just to enjoy being on the water and to get a bit of exercise.
Yeah it's certainly not as rad as something white water but if it gets some kids away from their video games and gets anyone outside that would otherwise not be, sweet.

Haven't these SUP's noticed the people around them who have figgered out you can put a sail on those boards?
I mean retro is all well and good in certain designs but, really.

I've never tried it, or even seen it happening, so have no comment in that regard.
Andy has a good point - if nothing else, the things might allow good access to marshy and swampy areas.

I dunno, on a warm day in Hawaii when I want to jump on and off a surfboard, surf, and also go places, it is a good hybrid between surfing and kayaking. In cold water, I'm not interested...
Unless that cold water is on a river, in which case, bringing to the local river surf hole looks rather fun!

How do they keep them from getting dinged in rivers? It seems like they would always be knocking into rocks.
FACT: I was picking up a surfboard from a ding repair guy this weekend. While paying and with my back turned, my 6 year old tried to help out by picking up the board--he dropped it and put a fresh hole in the bottom.

I am a traditional surfer but many of my friends are great SUPers.
IMO: As long as they honer the priority rules in the line up and show respect I am cool with it. I surfed with Buzzy Kerbox yesterday and he was on his SUP and we all got a bunch of waves and had a blast.
The SUP is here to stay and it's great to see people getting out on their boards and having so much fun every where from the Everglades to down winding ocean swell riding coast runs, to rivers, and lakes.

I was in Hawaii about 5 years back on a fair to good day and there was ONE guy on a SUP and he was getting 5 times as many rides as the rest of us. It's just a far more efficient way to paddle out. Plus you can catch more small waves and ride them longer on a big board.
I imagine once you do that you just like the sensation and use it even when there are no waves. I get bored in flat water on a kayak or anything so to me what would contribute to the boredom is the flat water, not what boat/board I'm using.
It's interesting that people choose to badmouth something they have never tried. If people are into it there must be some appeal right?

I've done it in Tahoe. Its fun to go do, but its never something I would buy. But definently cool just to cruise arond the lake for a few hours. It's more fun than laying on the beach like everyone else thats for sure.
