I've got a bunch of these guys (Allans, Photo pilfered from internet)
Visiting now. They are quite drab till the light catches them just right and they explode into polished copper brilliance.

Last year they had a nest in the olive tree by the bedroom window. The nests are so small I haven't quite figured out where it is this year.

Like dolphins, they are fascinating little creatures. And also like dolphins, as I said before, they have a weird inherent 'goodness' to them. They are never aggressive and always curious of humans.

There is something delightfully bizarre about that. It makes me feel good about the world. That there is pure good out there.

(I can't find my f*#king camera anywhere! Or else I'd try to take more pics...)

Peace, out!~

Bluering: Heidi feeds them sugar-water, and they seem to do fine: year after year.

In 2009, Heidi finally saw a hummingbird nest. On first look, they resemble a "paper-wasp" nest. Luckily she took a second and then a third look.

We soon found four nests in conifers.

Nice pics, Fritz!

I guess the nest appearance differs between environments. Mine looks more like a porcelain espresso cup. A small one. They use different materials based on their surroundings I'd guess.

I'll get more pics soon, after I find my darn camera...

hey there bluering, say, thanks for sharing all this...

in san jose, years back, at a career school, we found a hummingbird nest... was fun to see her there each day...

got a great picture that one guy shared with us, and passed them out to whoever wanted one...

in calif, my mom had lots of hummingbirds..
in soutn texas, i saw a few, but not many, perhaps just due to our yard, and not many flowers...

now, here in michigan by the woods, one year, i had many!! but i had LOTS of red gladiolas (as seamstress mentioned)... they loved the gladiolas...

i have some planted here, will have to see what happenes, ... so far, i have not seen any at the feeder, though...

*fun stuff.. thanks again...

*i have mama and papa robin patroling my yard, and over the fence on the east, and west, sides of my yard... HUGE nest, is in the shed...

fun to see her there and in the yard everyday ...

happy bird watching...

Yeah, Neebee, ya take the birds you can get. Here's to hoping you get some hummingbirds your way.

You're always a bright light in this place, Neebee. Keep being you.

Cool pics, Fritz. I was up at Rush Creek the other day & the Black Chins are exquisite! Tiny little f*#kers, fearless in a Great Big World.

Had one show up today at the 2nd pitch belay of Geronimo. Kinda startled me, usually I hear them coming but all of a sudden it was right in front of me lol.

It got bored pretty quick and went up and buzzed around Cosmic a bit before taking off.

Back last century when my son was about eight, we went on a hike up Mt. Baldy in the early spring.

At the springs just below the Sierra Club hut, the flowers were in full bloom and attended by a large flock of hummers.

There must have been 25-50 of them. Each male had staked out a plant and was fiercely defending an invisible cube about six feet on a side. Where the cubes overlapped, or shared a border, things got interesting.

We sat and watched them and lost all interest in going to the top.

Those are wonderful nesting photos! And what species is the bird at the water fountain?
I have hummingbirds up here, mostly Broadtail and Rufous, with a few tiny Calliope birds from time to time. By the middle of summer, the little birds are going thru about a gallon of nectar a day. Whew! Right now there are only a couple of dozen hanging around, but in a month or so there will be quite a few more. And then they all leave about the same week in early September. Quite amazing.

Ugh, I fear the worst.

I woke up at 3am on the couch and went outside to have puff off my pipe-tobacco, and the indoor patio light was on and the bird was flying around in circles around the patio. I doubt it was because of the light. But it was weird.

She would not return to her nest. She finally settled near the nest.

She sat there all morning and took off a few minutes ago. She hasn't returned yet.

I even pushed her on her branch to make sure she wasn't dead. She wasn't. Maybe she senses the eggs are bad, I dunno. I'll update...

As of 3:30 pm, my little Lady is still manning her post on the nest.

I just wonder what freaked her out last night? She was crazy.
