You are camping with three other families but you want a stranger to watch your kids while you climb?
As the parent of three I suggest involving your children in the entire experience. If that means you don't get to climb hard for a little while, that's ok.
At 3 years old, I'm sure your children want to be involved in everything you do.

I think T*R may have the best suggestion actually... now that all the paranoia has been whipped up and the flaming has begun.
PS: I wouldn't underestimate Tucker. He's a man of many talents ;) He could teach the little guys to trundle like a pro.

References from the parents? Sue happy? Really???
Agreed - T*R has a great suggestion. Also, just a thought, it sounds like you have a big enough group that you are camping with that you could take shifts watching the kids. It'll save you some money plus you'd have someone you know/trust watching your kids.
Good luck to you and have a wonderful vacation - Joshua Tree is a magical place!

Why is getting a babysitter a big deal? Throw down some snacks, take care of a few "Code Browns," earn a little $.

thanks to 'Lolli' for an ounce of sanity;
people sure love to give unsolicited advice...
my and wife are structuring our vacation and climbing as we choose;
as stated prior, we're notting running off on our own to the Wonderland while the kids sit in the campground.
we just want an extra pair of hands at the crag. pretty simple.

Locker, i know you have an AWESOME son.
That didn't happen by accident. You're a great dad.
Edit:
if folks are going to post things like this they should expect all kinds of input, good and bad.
Thier job is clear. It is thier responsibilty to decide what is best for the kids.
All the advice from non-parents is entertaining and interesting.
It gives me more insight into a world I left many years ago.

I'd be a little careful asking on the intardweb, especially supertopo... have you see the people who hang around this place?
they were misled by the guidebook covers.

I agree with Lolli. Babysitting is a relatively common phenomenon...
Most JT routes are under half a rope long. Eighty feet is not fat to stray from one's kiddos, particularly with one parent on the ground belaying most of the time. Extra hands are needed to keep the little ones safe while someone is climbing and someone belaying. And they can always ask for references, meet the people first, and in a small climbing community ask around about volunteers.
I haven't yet managed to leave my little girl with a sitter (I haven't yet gotten up the guts to trust someone else), but we have enjoyed letting her play in the daycare at the local gym. It's been nice to actually climb (even plastic) together after a couple years not able to. Good luck, ng.

This request doesn't seem like a big deal to me. You'll find someone good and have a great time on your trip. Good luck!

LOL, man this is a funny thread. Ya joins the taco and you get all kinds of advice.
My half cent. (deflation) or maybe thats all its worth.
He said he isn't leaving the kids alone with the babysitter. He is taking them with him to the crag. He just wants an extra set of hands at the base. 3 year old twins are a handful. I think he is trying to do a good thing for himself and his family and his friends. He said he has looked around for help. He is going on a trip, so bringing someone has its own issues.
As for references. I think Lynne was right to see if he knew anyone she knew. The climbing community is small. Sometimes Women need to be more careful then men do.
As for my resume for answering questions about raising kids. I don't have kids of my own, but my sister lived with me with her two boys for 6 years. One was 2 and one was a newborn. I changed plenty of diapers. The youngest wasn't completely potty trained until he was almost 3. We did have to push him a bit though to get it done. Now he is about to graduate from university. He still has mental scars from us pushing him to get potty trained. ( just kidding.. haha )
