Funny thread.

But, hey, don't use poison!
Do something that physically controls whatever it is.

The most humane is to get a little Havahart trap and catch and release.
Doesn't work too well until you seal however it/they got in.

Or get a killing trap that makes an audible SNAP. You don't want the corpse to get cold. The fleas could jump off seeking a new host.
Anybody think of that?????
Put it in outdoor trash or bury.

Or get a pellet gun and go on rat safari.

If you use poison, even magic jerky poison, then something else eats the victim, it dies, then something eats it, it dies, etc.

Tami,
you been itching?

Agreed Ron. Hey, your post reminds me of one of my favorite websites. In this installment, they discuss the Havaheart trap. Enjoy!

Ok, I've got a question.

In my bedroom wall next to my bed, there is a family of flying squirrels. They're mellow during the summer months, but all winter long it's an incessant track race/MMA fight about a yard from my head.

My house is old, like built in 1795, so the framing is different and they have free reign over that wall.

I like them, it's fun to wake up and see them gliding away for the day, but I'd kind of like to get rid of them.

I know where they enter, only it's 25' in the air.

Anyone know of a good way to relocate them? I don't want to kill them, they're cool and do no harm.
I've thought of sealing up their egress/ingress during the day while they're out and about but what if one is chillin inside? I'd hate to starve a little sucka' almost as much as I'd hate the smell of it in my wall.

Any thoughts?

Dingus, winter is my lean season, financially. If I were to take your suggestion I'd have to go on vacation again, and it's just not in the cards.

I'm taking intense interest here as I have the same problem. My cats don't seem able to contain the outbreak but I am thinking of locking the cats in the attic one night with the rats. Anyone tried that? Other than a pissed off pair of cats does it work?

Furry Rat jerky in the walls may increase the insulation quality of your home.
Maybe....

I recently came home in the evening and saw a rat in my garage. First time ever. As rats go this one was pretty chill. Didn't run at me, just kinda sauntered off. As he/she left I said if I saw them again, they were dust.

Rat came back for another visit so I have a rat trap for it. Trouble is it is about 3X's the size of a mouse trap and if I screw up I could lose a finger.

Any tricks to setting a rat trap without deploying it on yourself ??? Thanks, lynnie

Captain, unfortunately there is no other "someone". It's just me against Rat. Just checked....the rat trap is 4X as large as a mouse trap. The spring is incredible.......

Bribe a neighbor, then treat their wounds. You're nice, they won't hold it against ya.
I'm tryin' over here.

My neighbor up here in the wilds uses electrocution traps for mice. Claims they work. Looks like a small, black, old fashioned mailbox. Takes 4 C cells.
Don't know if they come in RAT size. I'll have to ask him.

I use a couple of different live traps for mice. They seem to work about the same. Bait with peanut butter on a wheat thin. Set at least 2 traps in the same area for quick relief. Pick up the traps in the morning and drive the beggars 1 1/2 miles down the road for release. Anyone noticing more mice in Castle Rock State Park lately?

My mom frequently puts the cat in the attic (they live on acreage and mice is a part of the deal there). The cat takes care of them and doesn't seem upset at all. Not sure how the cat would feel about a rat, but I assume if it's a big cat, he'd be good with it. :)

I dunno Ricardo, flying squirrels are so cool I'd just put in a window to watch them.

Maybe come summer you can just smoke them out with something herbal before sealing up.

This is the honest truth ! I just went out to the garage to attempt rat trap deployment. What I found were several shredded and eaten Packages of Raid Double Control Ant Baits.

Rat must be desperate. Can 4 Ant Baits kill a rat ? Going back out to see what else he/she has ingested......

Yeah Ron, they are cool. I watch them every morning as they dive off the house.

They've been in the walls for years, maybe I'll give them another reprieve.

The red squirrels in the garage however...

Lynne - had a squirrel chew a hole in my garage door. He got in, then chewed the lid off a bottle of ant killer. Then he dined on the ant killer. Not sure how much.

I didn't know any of this until I first found a dead squirrel in my back yard. He was dead mid-stride.

He didn't make it far. I assume your rat won't either. Just don't let your pet cat now eat that rat.

Thanks for the story and the warning Crimpie :D No pets roaming our country neighborhood. I myself currently have no warm, fun critters to play with.

I looked up the active ingredient....it's Avermectin B1. I think the rats are going after the other 90% inactive ingredients.....pro sugar or something similar. Couldn't find listing for the inactive stuff.

Hope all is well with you. Happy New Year !

Ricardo, smoke them out with good herb and see if they fly funny.

With a little luck they won't even remember where they lived.
