Warbler,
But if the approach is so long and arduous, and nobody ever goes there, and say the route hasn't seen a second ascent in 30 years, AND a number of "classic climbers" need to agree it's classic, then it can't be a classic?

"It CAN (could) be a classic, until more classic climbers judge otherwise."
How do I know if I'm classic enough of a climber to judge whether or not a climb is a classic?

Only if several other classic climbers all reach a consensus that you are a classic climber can you think of yourself that way. They will judge whether you present a compelling line from bottom to top, whether you have historical relevance, and whether you are any good on rock.

Yay for drills!
There'd be a couple 'classics' here if it weren't for bolted cracks.
Racing to finish pitches up on my conglomerate home turf before the bosch gets to them is good inspiration. Tick, tick, tick. <3 choss.

If it looks really good, climbs really good and puts you into really good situations....and stands the test of time, it may be a classic.

Ah, how to define classic climber. Anywhere from Tucker Tech to Tobin Sorenson, Jim Bridwell to Pat Ament, Dean Potter to Randy Leavitt, and on and on.
So, Kevin, you get out of California often?

I agree... some feature that your eyes just get drawn to, where the climbing is fun and worth it, and when you get to the top you just go "That was so classic!"

It depneds on the climbing venue. A classic climb at Ralph Stover State Park in eastern PA [i.e. Tango] would be a non-climb in the Gunks.
So what makes a classic? The relative route quality as compared to the climbs that surround it. Tango is surrounded by vegetated choss held together with mud, but it's a classic. While Tango actually climbs semi-rock and vegetation, missing most of the mud. The bottom of the 3rd/4th class approach to Lurking Fear would be a classic at Ralph Stover.

As I think was mentioned before, to me a "classic" is a natural beautiful line that catches your eye when it comes into view, and then it lives up to or surpasses your expectations when you get on it. IMHO the less bolts the better. The Naked Edge comes to mind.

A "classic line" is somewhat akin to that woman that catches your eye.
Yah, big boobs, a nice butt, good looking legs.....all good from the male
side of life, but she still might not be a keeper.
It's more the total package that counts. And the routes that tend to be
classic encompass a variety of factors: history, style, position,
quality of rock and variety of techniques required.
Route like Stoner's, Reg. on Higher Catherdral Rock, Plasic Exploding,
and best of all time; Silk Road at Calaveras Dome.
